Hi all,
I was just wondering if I welded my 60 series diff would it have adverse effects on road and off??
I do 60% off road, 10% of that would warrant a diff lock, but can not afford an air locker yet, and 40% on road, including dirt roads?
Also would removing the sway bars be ok, it's a non-turbo desiel, so corner speed isn't an issue!! I was thinking of disconnectors but if a bit more body roll is all that results, I'm happy to live with that.

Welded rear will wear the rear tyres down faster than normal!!
It will also CHIRP going around corners and in the wet it can sometimes be a handfull!
If none of that worrys you than theres nothing stopping you! I ran a welded rear in the back of a surf for a year and loved every minute of it, improves off roading by heaps!!
I also ran no sway bars and noticed a slight change in the body roll behavior on road and noticed an increase in wheel travel off road!!
Both mods will effect on road performance and both will improve off road performance!!!

unless you weld it up really well the weld will break...it happens to all of them..been there done that
this is what happens then
And then as one part snaps the weld, it pounds the metal surfaces making schrapnel and thus gets into your carrier and pinion bearings.
It then also causes premature wear of the crown wheel and pinion gears and then before you know it you up for a whole new diff center because of 5 dollars worth of welding rods..
Find a cheap LSD center and wack that in with a shim up..alll good then.

running a spool (ie permanantly locked diff) on road is illegal in all states afaik. it makes the vehicle a real handful especiall in the wet, as well as the other bad things people have mentioned.
I have an 80 series limited slip centre I could be convinced to part with. make an offer.
or I have an airlocker for sale fairly cheap (see for sale section) but there are a few other people in line for it.
lockrights are a decent low $ solution.

I say do it, and be prepared for a little change in driving habits... haha...
I've welded the spiders in my '83BJ60, and also have the gears welded in my '84BJ42. I also have numerous friends with welded trucks, and like others have said, its a great improvement. I opted to weld some of the voids in the spiders and side gears, as opposed to welding it all together like others do. I had a proffesional welder friend weld them up for me, and no probs so far. Properly clean the gears off with Xyleen(Sp?), preheat the gears, fill the voids. this way you have flat on flat surfaces making contact.
I'd recommend changing the diff oil around the second week to make sure the weld is holding.

I have run welded diffs for years and i am YET to see the WELDS fail!!!!!
If the welds are failing then get someone that can weld to do it for you!!!
