gti motor no pull in 5th
gti motor no pull in 5th
hey all have got sierra 89 with 92 gti motor and s4 and 32simex and no pull in 5th gear some help would be great
I'd be surprised if a GTi motor makes any more torque at 3500rpm than a stock 1.3, and a stock 1.3 probably wont pull 5th with 32's either. I reckon you need a bit more gearing to make the GTi work.

I've got a MK1 (88 model) GTi in my 89 sierra with standard gearing on 235?45?15's (29's) and it still cruises at 110 in 5th (100 with a head wind).
I can get from 80 to 100 in 5th but after 100 "pull" is pretty much non existant but it's not like you would overtake in 5th anyway.
I am planning on the same tyre combo and gearing as you (have the gears etc waiting here) and with that combo gearing should be better than what I have now as series 4's are desgined to bring standard revs from 32?33" tyres.
IMO your engine must be a little tyred or perhaps cammed up so it has no power down low at all.

I still can't see what's unusual about what you're reporting - Yes, a GTi motor makes lots of power, above about 4000rpm. expecting it to lug isn't going to work - its will feel very flat.
If it's pulling hard in 4th from 80-100 then that sounds fine to me. 5th at 80 though will be under 3K and there's no way a GTi motor will pull that any better than a carby 1.3.
Remember too even though you've corrected your gearing back to stock you have added lots of weight, rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag with the bigger tyres. This will hurt performance even with the gearing the same.
Whilst I can't say if your engine is tired or not, and it may be a bit down on power, expecting it do do something it's not supposed to will lead to dissapointment.
(personally, I would be aiming for 3700-3900 rpm @ 100 with your setup. I think it woudl go well then.)

What Steve is saying is pretty much correct but what I mean is that 5th should still be useable, ie you should still be able to cruise at 100kph comfortab, and should be able to use 5th at 80kph also. My zook has extractors and a 2 inch exhaust an uni filter, this didn't seam to make much difference when I installed them but maybe it's something you should try along with a thorough engine tune up and service.
5th usable at 80 ? , ok i drive a gti , and race it on the 1/4 (as you know GRPABT1)
firstly under 3000 rpm you arent making any great torque , torque from 3000 to 6000 is unbelievable , and even then in my setup with the cams and gears im still making torque a while after 6000 . Now my tyre/wheel combo are 15/50 and if i put it in 5th at 80 im wasting my time , even at 110 , 5th has bugger all pull ... heres where my gearchanges are on the DRAG STRIP , and if i change any earlier im not making the required torque to go faster (and my final drive ratio is similar to a sierra) 1st to 2nd is at 60 km/h 2nd to 3rd is at 105 km/h , im still in 3rd gear with a bit more torque at the 400m mark doing 146km/h !!!!
On the road with obvious speed restrictions , 1st from 0-35-40ish , 2nd gear up to 60 , and then i change to 3rd , i actually drive my car in 3rd in 60km/h zones !!!!! even on the highway in 100km/h zones im only using 4th (at 3000rpm where it will still comfortably accelerate), ill change to 5th if its a long flat road , but even pulling up a slight incline under 3000 rpm in 5th on the highway it doesnt like (im doing 2600 rpm in 5th at 100.
The gti engine is a revving engine , it doesnt make any great power under 3000 rpm , and thats why when people want me to fit a gti engine in a sierra , i tell them forget it .. they are better off going the 1.6 sohc as it makes more progressive torque at lower rpms , in a sierra as a road car , revving the shit out of it and driving hard is fun , but for offroad , we all know that slow and steady wins the race.
