In the process of a 1.6efi swap and i'm planning on putting a surge tank in the rear drivers side near fuel filler. I was wondering whether the fuel tank breather shown in the picture is needed as i was thinking about using it as a return line from the surge tank back to the fuel tank.
I have a breathable fuel cap so am i right in thinking the tank can still breath through the fuel filler pipe?

That hose is to stop splashback when filling the tank.It lets air escape from the tank as fuel is going in.
If you use it for a return you will have to fill the tank very slowly.

That would work, because there wouldnt be any fuel flowing down the return when cars off and stationary i.e. when filling up. Thanks Jaffa, you just solved my fuel issue
