i have a dilema !!
in my zook , i have a 1.6 block + 1.3 head !!
i have been running a cam belt to suit a 1.6 , which has always been a touch to long (tensioner always at full adjustment)
been the that way for over 4 years !!
belt finally broke the other day , so replacing !!
BUT , i want to fit a shorter belt .................
so , do i go shorter by length reguired , OR by certian No. of teeth ???
please help !!!

To some extent the number of teeth is irrelevant. All it determines is wether the belt is hunting or non hunting, it wont effect the cam timing at all.
You will need a belt with probably one less tooth maybe two. The profile of the teeth is important though. Make sure the belt has the same shaped teeth. Width of the belt varies aswell. This will be determined by your pullies and what they can take width wise. Marginally wider or skinnier isn't a problem.
Not 100% sure but i think corolla belts are similar????
Good luck, Dan

As long as the pulleys are stock size belt tooth count would be irrelevant, no different to changing the size of V belt pulleys to gear up/down a water pump or alternator.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.

X2 It is a bit like a conveyor belt, shit in = shit out, belt length irrelevant. Belt tooth pitch and profile are the two important things to worry about, although you may need some way of adjusting the cam timing if the new belt and adjustment mechanism places a tooth in a slightly different position, it could make a couple of degrees difference (ie +/- half a tooth pitch on the cam)
Could you modify the adjuster (pad the arm out a bit), or if it is a bearing to the back of the belt could you make a press fit ring slightly larger to put the adjustment mechanism at about halfway? If there is an integral water pump, could you source another slightly larger (more teeth) cog to go on it?
