cv's r066605 od aeu2522

cv's r066605 od aeu2522
im looking at upgrading the cv's in my defender 110
its a 1998 300tdi.
im not lookiing at longfields or ashcrofts, as this is a daily driver and does alot of miles. i believe that these cromo cv's are great for what they are but not hard enough for highway wear.
what are the pros and cons of going to a range rover r06665 or to an aeu2522????
who's a good supplier, how much should i be paying?
what extra bits will i need to suit the cv's
cheers, serg

The CVs themselves aren't any stronger, but you will get stronger inner axles, so the overall result should be stronger.
However, I thought Keith from RT was using longfields on a DD Disco...

cheers,
im sort of limited a bit as it has to suit a maxidrive locker, so front axle is the key....
i thought that the 32 spline cvs had week stars?????
and weren't as strong as the r66605 or aeu2522 in general
i will have to see what keith is doing, but im sort of stuck for needing it to suit my MD axle

It is a shame Keith can't get axles made up with MD locking dog splines.uninformed wrote:cheers,

As for the CVs - I haven't looked at one for a while, but as far as I remember, the bell is about the same size on both, and the star of the defender CV should actually be slightly STRONGER as the axle spline is smaller.

cheers ben, yeah i know. and its a shame that mal didnt develop a kit to install the longfield fj80 cv that he had ideas for.....
i checked out kieths website
they are no longer doing the longtracks because the manufacture of the cv wont produce them any more, it says that they are protecting another onseller that happens to be more expensive.
this onseller is not longfields, as he is helping keith. im guessing its ashcroft
from my dealings, rockford areomatic parts, the manufactures of longfields etc are very unprofessional. and to tell you the truth i think they could have made the cvs better......
from talking to various people that have looked at longfields a few lttle details could be better
not nocking longfields they are world proven and bobby long has addressed a need. very well. and he is extremly professional
ill just keep lookin i guess.
so whos a good supplier of r66605 and aeu2522?
are genuine better than aftermarket?
what sort of prices per pair?
cheers, serg

IME Genuine (GKN) 2522s tend to be slightly stronger, but usually fail at the bell/star. Aftermarket (Allmakes) are cheaper, but usually snap the stub shaft. That said, someone posted on AULRO recently that the aftermarket ones were available for $65 ea on ebay. That pays for a lot of spares!!!uninformed wrote:cheers ben, yeah i know. and its a shame that mal didnt develop a kit to install the longfield fj80 cv that he had ideas for.....

I have heard this a few times but not seen any evidence as yet, I just wondered if you or any one else had have some wear out from high milage, if so how many miles ?
on your 300 tdi 110, you have a maxi locker with maxi 24/32 spline shafts, is that right ?

$65 ebay cv's
G'day all
I've had $65 ebay cv's in my 110 for about 12 months now. Only turning 235/85 muds but can't complain at all about their performance. Have given them a fair work out. I figured I could afford to go through a few at $65 a set.

ok, some missunderstanding here,
to make it clear i have not installed the locker
the Maxidrive locker kit has the standard Maxidrive axles 24/23.......
my vehicle is stock front end.....
i think i will go with the R66605 range rover cv's just not sure weather to chase the aftermarket ones or not....
Dave, my landy does about 25000km/year towing a 2 tonne trailer.
when mal hardnest tested the longfields i have (30/30) they seemed to be a little soft, which i guess would be better for shock loading....
cheers, for your help...

Serg. The GKN (Genuine) 2522s in my 110 have lasted 350k km of on/off road driving. Even if the Longfields only last 150k or so before they are worn out, that is still 6 years!!! And you do have 2 sets!uninformed wrote:ok, some missunderstanding here,

But - if you want to run rover CVs - the stubless rangie CVs seem to be popular with comp guys as they can change the stub quickly when they break one. Butm the 2522s should be stronger overall, and yours isn't a comp truck?

unfortunately i dont know where i would get a 24/30 spline maxilocker axles made????
plus machine work to make the cv's fit....
i have my reasons for going rr over 110 cv's
cheers, serg
ps 2 years ago i spent $3000 to get 4 prototype cvs made, it never happened because of those dicks at rockford aeromatic.....
would have been good to, all made out of hytuff or 300m, including bell, stubless like range rover cv so different stubs for different applications could easy be made out of hytuff....same star, cage and ball size as aeu2522 so not as much stress as the small ball longfields but a bigger dia than aeu2522, max to fit in a coil swivel ball...
just never happened :(

you can fit the 2522's by using the thin walled bush and the tall maxi drive flange (or stock flange and spacer) but I am not sure how you will fit the 606665's in the 300 axle, I have not seen this done, uninformed wrote:ok, some missunderstanding here,

by the way we recently made some heavy duty 606665's by taking the HD 2522's, chopping the stub off and wire eroding a female 10 spline in the bell and pressing a spacer on the outside diameter, we made these for 2 customers in Europe that had to use the 606665 design as they had maxi portals,
I am not sure why you want the 606665's 10 spline, I see this as a step backwards in strength,
I understand the hardness comments and understand the theory but as I mentioned I have yet to see a worn pair with my own eyes and I have sold over 1000 of these,

I agree - but they are/were popular with the comp guys over here, as the stub was a "fuse" which was easy to changeashtrans wrote:

However Wayne Smith now runs cro-mo (longtracks or ashcroft?) CVsSmithy jnr wrote:Hi Dave
In last years outback we blew up our rear diff, which was a pegged, 4.1 KAM crown wheel & Pinion with an ARB locker on day one in the sand, but it went bloody well up until that last 50 meters. We broke two stub axles and didn't bother changing either one untill that stage was finished. We can get stub changes down to two minutes with our rattle gun running off the car and they are still a cheap fix. The Lonfields and chrome moly CV options are pretty expensive , would you like to by 4 of them at once so you at least had spares in case they broke. THere is no way we would enter the outback without spares.
Smithy jnr wrote:...we have been running them in Mike Smith Blue Rangie since the Ateco this year and are very impressed with there strength, normally we would have broken 2-3 stubs and possibly a CV in an event, but since fitting these CV's & axles we haven't looked back.

great info, keep it coming.....
how do the r60665 bell, star and cage compare to the aeu2522 bell, star and cage????
well i happen to have some hytuff stubs for r606665's plus as has been said the stock stubs can be used as a fuse.....
no my truck is not a comp rig, but down the track who knows what it will become.....
if i was competing i would probably consider the ashcroft aeu2522 cromo, even though it is a sore point with me because of rockford aeromatic......
but ashcroft cv's seem to be well proven in rover circles.
just waying up my options that best suit me.... oh and if i can get them for $65 each thats pretty good
cheers, serg

In a way but not really...
They're out of stock in US (but not here )
and the next batch should be ready in 3/4 months...
Hopefully more "wallet friendly" than ever if you know what I mean
P.S.
Any flight to Ger on your agenda?
I look forward to seeing you soon in Karlsruhe in front of a beer

Hi Serg,
DAVE, was this because the range rover cv's failed or the just wanted peace of mind????
they were breaking them quite often,
DAVE, how many of these 1000 + are in high road km's vehicles???
not sure to be honest, addmittedly most will be for off road biased and competition trucks but some will be in daily drivers,
just wondering why you didnt cut down an HD aeu2522 and machine a 24 spline end to suit the portals, rather than go 10 spline internal in the cv????
Yes, this would have been stronger, the 2 customers just wanted stronger 606665's so thats what I made, it would have been better to cut them 24 spline and make new 24 spline stubs for the portals, this would have upgraded both the CV and stub at the same time, I guess the stubs are hytuff so they are not the immeadiate weakpoint,

i think that hytuf would not be the weak point but the fact that there 10 spline inide the cv so this small root dia is the weak point, plus the crappy rr cv
your cv bell and stub is made from 4340 right?
from what i know hytuff is closer to 4340 300m, making a short stub cv in 24spline would have to be good to..... but you have to do what your customers want i guess....
thanks for the feedback Dave good to have a company like yours here

I have Ashcroft CVs in a daily driver
covered 12k miles then they were removed as a part of a seal fix and the were untouched and like the day they were fitted.
I have M/D shafts/in a 97 axle with the bronze bushes.
I had AEU2522s(cheapo) and they bust far to easily even on small tyres
