gearbox question. 4-5 speed

Post by built4thrashing »

what are the differences between the 4 and 5 speed boxes apart from the 5th gear? will the extension housing which houses the 5th gear bolt up to the back of a 4speed box?

Also ive read somewhere that the 1.3 carry van has a similar box and has a lower 1st gear. whats involved in putting one of these in a 1.3 sierra?

thanx

I don't know if 4 and 5 speed bits are interchangeable.
I do know a carry 5 speed 1st gear will bolt straight in to a Sierra 5 speed.

I dont know anything for sure, but from what I can work out or have seen there is 4 gearboxes for sierras;

(a) 4speed 1Ltr SJ410,
(b) 1Ltr 4speed MG410 (Maruti),
(c) 1ltr 5speed MG410 (Maruti)
(d) 1.3 5speed.

(a) will only bolt up to a 1ltr F10A
(b) is similar to a SJ413 5speed but with out a 5th gear and rails (or something) but can be made into a 5 speed, has different bell housing to SJ410's not sure if it is the same as 1.3 bell housing, I suspect its not.
(c) I havn't seen one myself but I think it is just a MG410 4 speed BG with the 5th gear stuff added.
(d) wont bolt to SJ410 at all.

pic:
SJ410 1ltr 4 speed on left..... MG410 1ltr 4 speed that could have a 5 gear put in it on the right.

Hope this helps and that the info is right.

just thinking of builting up a new 5speed and while at it i thought if i could lower the gearing in 1-2-3 it would help in the bush.

you say 1st from a carry van will fit in the 1.3 box but what about the other gears? are they completely different?

sierra boxes are getting hard to find these days so any alternative would be worth finding.

Also did the carry van come out with an auto at all?
