What model patrol are you talking about. On GQ patrols the TPS was only fitted to automatic TD42s & was used to enable gear changes. On GU patrols it was only there for to be used as an input in the basic emmission system that was fitted to get them complied in australia. It is fitted on the injector pump on top of the throttle linkage

My manual GQ Safari had one, apparently operated the butterfly valve in the intake, has something to do with the emmissions.

As the name suggests, it senses the throttle position and is wired up to the auto computer.

When mine was playing up it wouldn't kick down the gears when the accelerator was put down and it was stuck in top gear (limp home mode).

There are two versions. A 3 wire unit and a 6 wire unit which mine was (for a diesel GQ auto). The 6 wire units are hard to find over here.

The Throttle position sensor and the throttle positon switch are within the same unit on the pump as shown above. Each use 3 wires.

afaik the switch side of the TPS is usually an idle switch.
i would assume its so the ECU always knows where idle postion is as the variable resistor can change value due to wear on the contacts (rather than relying on the variable resistor to determine idle). basicly a safe guard in case of TPS failure.

both are used together, for auto box and emmision systems (egr + butterfly)
