GQ 3 litre..... what are they like????

Post by KRI55 »

Please let me know if these are rubbish or not.

would be 5 speed manual.

how cheap are they to run?

any known probs?

whats the grunt like compared to 4.2 lt petrol?

It'd be used for 3-400 k drives and on the beach.

All advice appreciated.

Thanks

In standard form they are fairly sad.

std 3.0 GQ side by side with std 4.2 petrol GQ, it would be disappointing.

the engine is same as VL commodore and Skyline. so Turbo/injection and mods are a plenty for them.

I had one and loved it!
Reved hard all day every day!
Mine had extractors/zorst and carbi mods with 33's and would smoke a gq4.2 auto of the mark with 33's!
Fuel use expect around 15l/100km on highway and around 18 odd round town depending on how hard you drive it!
Must admit though loaded up it was a bit of a dog..thats where the extra torque of the 4.2 at higher speeds is better to keep things moving without full throttle!
There's just the usual things to look out for which is the smaller/weaker gearbox, not as strong as the 4.2! and head cracking problems which i never had, but i know of quite afew!

All in all there a good truck which should see 3-400 thou before problems! Mine did 350 odd before i sold it and i only put new bearings and 3rd gear syncro in the gearbox and that was it!

cheers
Oh they get excellant results from strapping a turbo on to

SWB or LWB? There's a noticeable weight difference.
This is not legal advice.

lots of money needs to be spent. you dont need to rebuild the rb30 (unless u want massave output )

apparently they can go well

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Nissan-Patrol-RB ... dZViewItem

motor/turbo ran 12.7et @ 107mph in vl calais (bigpsi) !

Here we have my beloved Nissan Patrol GQ lwb

comes with a RB30 turbocharged engine making 165rwkw with 10 pounds of boost on lpg at 5000rpm only reved to 5 on dyno makes power to 6500 more power with more boost and revs

gasresearch gas mixer, B2 convertor with boost ref, JD custom intake manifold, t3 turbo, intercooler, turbosmart pumpback blow off valve, boost controller, patrol electronic dizzy modified, recurved and boost retarter added by Jerry(ignition torque), K&N pod filter

3 inch mandrel bent exhaust from turbo back, $900 extreme clutch and pressure plate, recoed 5 speed gearbox

3 inch Koni lift kit with adjustable shockers

front adjustable panhard rod, off set front diff control arms

33x12.5x15 BF Goodrich all terrain tyres with 85-90% tread on 8" sliver sunraiser rimsX 5

momo steering wheel

owned this 4wd last 6 years, sent over $20000+

comes with reg but no rwc, it wouldn`t need much to roadworthy the most of it would be the gas tank is out of date($88from apa)

it does not need a engineers cert

any test drive welcome, car is powerful for a big 4wd, leaves new SS commodores for dead, but can also been driven like a dead stock car with ease, tows easy overtaking, ONLY!!!!! and l mean ONLY!!!!! reason for sell, lost licence for 18 months because of Patrol

adding a 2nd B2 convertor, should be able to run 18+ boost safely and make around 200kw

thanks for looking

yeah he was trying to sell that a while ago if i remember, with 165kw at the wheels it wont be leaving any new ss behind, unless there racing on mud!!

With that said the blocks are capable of 700+hp and there is plenty of cheap bits for them, in stock form they are fine with 31's with bigger tyres they start to hurt. Unlike the EFI version of the RB30 these are down on power but have a little better a torque curve (which is why nissan carbied em).

The carbies come in both mechanical and vacuum secondary, if you drive a vacuum based model they often jam and only run on primary butterfly making em feel a lot lazier than they actually are.

The gearboxes are actually internally similar to 300zx and VL Turbo 5 speeds, they are very close in ratios which makes em suitable to turbo as you have no rev drop so your always on boost. They are rumored to be weak which is not entirely true, if you use 5th at 60kph all the time (why would you) or tow big loads in 5th they tend to give up. 3rd can break on them too but usually they have to have been worked pretty hard to do that.

If your smart when you turbo it you will run high compresiion with lowish boost so it still has some power off boost and comes on boost earlier. You could set em up like the vl boys do with big T4's and 30psi but it wont help you for towing or off roading.

Diffs bodys etc all the same as the others.
