Whats this LJ worth?

Post by blackmav »

Been in a shed forever.
2 stroke, think its a 76?
Got it running the other week. Sounds cool but a bit gutless, maybe needs new reeds?
No rust at all, had a pretty good look aroundbut may have missed some.
Only have two pics at the moment but they show the condition, eg paint faded.
Two spare engines of unknown condition.

is it a 3cyl than its a lj50 new price was 2990 you could probably get a grand or more on ebay. As for being down on power it probably a cracked reed as that was a common problem with them.why not drive it and enjoy a bit of history . :?:

Yep 3 cyl. LJ50.

Price is looking better

If we start driving it round the farm, it will end upside down and be worth nuthin.
Would be an easy restore job and had its last rego 4 years ago.

And tires are fubar, hold air but age cracked.

If its a LJ50 they never had any power to start with :D so you might be confusing OK gutless with broken.

Engine life wasn't a feature of 50's so the spares make sense.
( usual disclaimers )

Well - were sorta stuck, its difficult to decide between no power and a healthy 50'....... If you cant get it into 4th before your across a set of traffic lights its probably sick.

As they have points and a carby then it COULD just be lousy tune... IF your going to run it for awhile after a long period of inactivity make certain you use two stroke fuel in the tank until the oil metering pump primes - and even then they were under lubed.

Ah the ringa ding ding still brings a tear to my eye

A crackreed is your trouble and new plugs gaped to the right size about a hacksaw blade always worked on mine and use outboard oil in it not motorcycle as they seem work better with outboard oil for some reason.

Three possibilities I can think of.
1) reed Valves
2) float levels/jets
3) blocked or missing exhaust expansion chamber.

Also make sure you use the correct plugs. DO NOT fall into the trap of throwing in hotter plugs ... they WILL hole the piston.

If you can get it for 500 grab it, it's a steal!
From the pics I'd happily pay 1500 - 2000

I would happilly sell it to you for $1500  but your in SA and I am in NSW.

There is a panno with a corolla motor and another soft top as well. Panno has a very rusty cab but we still drive it round. The other one is missing a few bits.
