intercooling rb30
intercooling rb30
I am going to intercool my rb 30 i just want to know what is my best option. If i use a frontmount will this still work out in bush at low speeds? Or should i use a water to air cooler if so what brand and how much you think they cost thanks.
with both types of cooler you still need airflow to get rid of heat....my money would be on front mount..well shrouded and sealed so fan pulls through core(s) only...crank driven fan has more power and airflow capability than a 12V fan cooling a remote core for jacket-water cooler...prices always subject to application and quality/efficiency of core used....
the only other thing i am worried about is the frontmount getting cagged full of mud and not working and restricting air flow to the radiator do you guys have any probs with this happening? It would be great to see some photos of how you mounted and ran pipe work. The core im thinking of getting is a 3in inlet and outlet and they enter and come out on the same side.

go to above link it has a bit of info, this exact design has been copied by 3 people i know on here so far so it cant be to bad.

[quote="GASDRX"]Double pass intercooler
Does not look like it would flow any good, i bet huge psi drop.
How thick is the core
Lot of people make do with what's available....I can't even buy a blank core for what they sell for on ebay.....and your stuff? do you fabricate/test?....put up pics instead of talk?

Looks like a 600x300x76 (core) from ebay about $280 landed. That would make it 150x76 real core flow.
I think just like above, an ebay cheapy but a $150 500x300x76 core with inlet and outlet opposite would have been better and spent the rest of the money on a few more bends and pipe work.
Longer pipe work makes bugger all difference too.
PS Not my thread tomahawkracefab so no pics of my stuff but look on ebay and search for GASDRX

i suggest you talk to someone who knows before you bad mouth dual pass coolers just cause you think there not flowing well. Nearly every after market component has an up and downside, and hate to break it to you but just based on your assumption I think you'll scare no one off.

Not trying to scare people off sure the intercooler would work but more probably suited to a 1.5L.NutterGQ wrote:i suggest you talk to someone who knows before you bad mouth dual pass coolers just cause you think there not flowing well. Never seen a double pass cooler that small ever.
I think some of you are looking at this the wrong way, yes has big core size of 600x300x76 but realistically its only the size of 150x76.
Search on ebay, ARE, PWR and look what core sizes they have for VL turbos and remember this is a rb30 with big single and straight gas.

once again rather than bashing a proven working product you have never owned and tested talk to someone who knows instead of being a keyboard warrior on outers.
ARE have actually run a small dual pass cooler on a mid 9sec rotary from memory, something tells me that thing flows more than a festiva which is what you imply a 600x300x75 dual pass is capable of.
So before you make more assumptions talk to people who own or build cars using a product before you come on here in your leather clad Xena warrior princess underwear talking utter rubbish.
I said it before and I will say it again, too many people read to much on the net instead of getting out there and doing it.
As for what vl's run its mostly over kill, for looks. Have you ever seen how small an AVO cooler is for a VL? and the power that can be made? Unless your pushing a stockT3 turbo to 25PSI your not needing a cooler half the size these chapel street commodores run. How many RB30's have you turboed? or worked on? or driven for that matter?
Got any secrets you can let me in on im always up for something new?

Show us the pic of the mid 9sec rotor
Have you actually seen a AVO cooler for the VL
Their core size is similar but have tanks top and bottom running complete length of the core, their core tubes run vertical not horizontal just like a safari intercooler kit for a GQ. eg their tank inlet and out let are 600x60 not 150x75. They would double your cooler for efficiency and flow;)
I started playing with them 12 years ago when i was 18, that car ran 12.5 with high flow and two welded supra intercoolers. Back then there were no custom coolers only import ones and truck ones. Have made a few custom plenums for VLs lately and had one on my wagon with a t4. Had 12sec VC commo, 12sec aspirated rotary turbo GQ and plenty more fast street cars then you have 355 vortech VS, turbo vn ss, turbo 253, turbo pulsar, dozen turbo rotors, turbo GQs just to name a few i have worked on.
Andrew, Awill4x4 on here does my welding.
But i dont need to come on here and rave on all the cars i built so it makes me feel better.
Built it over 6 years, tubbing, diff work, all external engine work and conversion.

I will ad a secret, run two convertors on a setup like that

ok guys has anybody put in a temp sensor on the inlet to the intercooler and another one up near the throtlebody somewhere. I guess this will settle the arguement of weather these work or not. The only thing i dont understand and i profess to know nothing about intercoolers hence the post is if the intercooler is 300x600x75 and its a duel pass wouldent that mean the cooling area is the whole core because it comes in the bottom does a u turn and exits the top so it has to pass through the whole thing?
Temps will be ok but the pressure drop not so. Need to measure with boost gauge before and after cooler.chrisgqturbo wrote:ok guys has anybody put in a temp sensor on the inlet to the intercooler and another one up near the throtlebody somewhere. Yes cool whole area but combines two intercoolers to one but problem is that core is too small. Its like a 2" exhaust compared to a 4", which is going to flow more
Like i said, it will work but design could have been better.
Free horse power to be had there, turbo working harder to push x amount of air through a too small orifice which in turns, more heat. Lower inlet temps more power.
Remember that cooler flow is 150x76 compared too any ebay cheapie which would be 300x76
Enough of the rant, a bit off topic Hey
