air ram diameters

Post by stu »

I know i can get a 4" and a 3" dia. base air ram head for a snorkle. (truck parts) what im planning to build is a stainless snorkle out of 3.5 inch pipe and id like to know if theres an air ram head available with a 3.5 inch dia. base.

i ran ARB but all i got is "well get back to you"....this generally means that they have no idea and are are not interested in finding out for me.

Worst case scenario is a 4 inch pipe snorkel....might look a bit too big.

AFAIK 3" and 4" are the only standard sizes.

I built my snorkel from 2.75" exhaust pipe before I realised. All I did was attach an aluminium collar to the end, so a 3" top fits on.

Safari make 3 and 3.5" air rams. Most ARB stores should have them in stock or be able to order them in. Be aware they are nearly $100 though.

My local TJM has 90mm rams in stock... which is 3.5".

Mine was only around $60 too.

Also, on a side note, I think 3" would suffice for air flow.

Most exhaust shops can swage them out a bit. Half an inch is easy on a pipe that size. Half an inch on a 1.5" tube has them trying to talk you out of it.

You guys are all crazy paying $60 or $90 for a plastic 3.5" air ram. The last donaldson one I bought (3") was $30 from QLD Diesel spares, and a donaldson 4" was about the same price.

Yeah, TruckBits down here (just out of Dandenong), are a fair bit cheaper than $90.

Thought I'd look into this donaldson stuff.

This is the web page for air filters
http://www.donaldsonfilters.com.au/engi ... sub16cat16

have stuff for everything.

The PDF has the details.

they do:
3"
4"
5"
6"
6.06"
7"
7.06"
8.06"

then low profile of 6" or 7"

3" air ram has 1" of h2o restriction

a air hood has higher restriction based on size and speed your going at.

Seems to be for trucks but who cares probably better than the car stuff :)

great stuff in that PDF

to work out an engines CFM requirements, you take HP x 2.5 and the number you get is the CFM requirement your engine will need.

Donaldson are one of the 2 largest filter manufacturers in the world. Chances are they made the OEM filter for your 4x4, or their equivalent filter will be as good or better than your OEM one.

yeah probably.

they have filter boxes that I wouldn't mind getting actually.

They have a new air pod called a top spin that looks pretty interesting, twists the air to chuck out 20 micron dirt particals with no filter then left over air is sucked through a simple filter then into your normal filter box double and tripple filtering of the air.
