Black Canister - What is it

Post by rogerramjet »

Greetings all

There's a black canister under my hood in the way of where I want to put a second battery, it has two hoses connected to it, one labelled "to tank" and the other "purge".

What is it? Can I get rid of it?

Its the charcoal canister, simply move it to wherever you want and extend/shorten hoses. Try to keep it on the same horizontal plane though, ie dont mount it right at bottom of firewall or right at top, keep it on same level if possible.
Just bolt it to the side of youre new battery holder, thats all i did.

Ahh yes, cheers PJ.

I am a not a great handyman, do i just drill into the firewall anywhere where there is space? Any issues with rust? How to I put thread into the new holes or should I use one of them butterfly bolt things which fold out once inserted?

There are many ways of doing it including the ones you just mentioned, just make sure you check whats on the other side of the firewall before drilling. If it were me i would drill 2 holes and used rivnuts, but you need a special tool to fit them. Also dont put canister too close to exhaust manifold.

It absorbs all the petrol fumes coming from the various things that have petrol in them instead of venting the fumes to the atmosphere....
When you start the engine the idea is it sucks them in and burns them harmlessly..........

I made a angle frame and I used the two bolt holes from the charcoal canister to mount my battery tray and left the canister in its original spot , just used longer bolts , Cheers Paul.
