my mate and i were talking over a few coldies the other day and we were discussing plans for my lux. anyway, he told me that he heard from somewhere that there is a difference in length in leaf springs between single, extra cabs and dual cabs. i said bullsh!t and didnt worry about it. but thought id ask, you never know. the floor is open.........................

All solid front axle leaf springs are the same length. Rears are the same length and fronts are the same length. Cab style has nothing to do with the spring lengths. Allthough dual cabs prob have extra leaves fitted from factory.

Your mate is talking about putting IFS rears up front in a solid axle. Yes they are longer.

i can understand the concept fairly well.


you put the rear springs from a standard lux up the front, you keep the rear springs for an IFS lux in the rear and put new longer shackles on it. that is not at all confusing, infact its one of the more straightfoward answers i have seen onthis site :P

thanks everyone, i just thought my mate was as dumb as he looks. but there is some sort of intelligence in his head after all, he will be pleased.

originally, he wasnt talking about putting rears up front, just about the leafs in general. but ill let him know that he was onto something.

Actually its also common to put IFS rears up front. Its just a bit more work than using stock rears up front.

why put rear leaf springs on the front?? i mean, why go through all the work when you can buy aftermarket leaf springs that will bolt straight on??
does it raise vehicle more than aftermarket?? sounds like alot of work with shackles, angles, etc??

They are longer than the std or aftermarket front packs which is a major factor to wheel travel. Also will get diff 50mm+ foward so you can run Bigger tyres also the longer the spring also the softer the ride. There is more reasons just a few that spring to mind

I think mine took 3-4 times to get it right either to much height or it'd sag drivers side :bad-words: Now it's level/ish

ok thanks.

but is it worth while doing this conversion or should i just go with aftermarket leaf springs?? i was only planning 2 inch body lift, 3 inch raised springs with extended shackles and running 35s, not building a comp truck, just a rig i could be proud of. it will be a daily driver. possibly comps like jamboree of clubkhana type events will be in future but for now just weekend wheeling with friends. would i get enough flex from the above setup to get by?? what do you guys think??

"Aparently" they break after a while. Only being 2 leafs the torque twisting them is what kills them but i think this is greatly afected by how you drive as well.
