hey,
just wanna know what is involved in transfering rego from nsw to qld. Does the NSW rego get cancelled and then re-registered in QLD, or can it be transfered.
I am buying the vehicle so it will also be changing names.

1. Get a well written receipt from the seller and NSW transfer papers. You don't actually need the later but if you show them to Qld Transport it helps with ID (don't have to sign a stat dec).
2. Get your own Qld Safety Certificate and
3. Head to Qld Transport and pay for stamp duty, new plates and 6/12 months rego. If you've driven the car up with NSW plates then you surrender them to Qld Transport.
You can't transfer the NSW but you can get a refund (only if you go into an RTA branch in NSW though i believe).

For point 3 above, you will need to be able to prove your current residency status, via a rates notice, lease agreement, electricity bill, photo ID, etc.
Also you will get a receipt if you hand NSW plates in to QLD DOT office, then you post receipt to RTA for refund. I think they only refund if it has more than either 1 or 3 months left, in multiples of said months. EG 3weeks left - too bad, too sad. Your better off getting the QLD roadworthy 2 or 3 weeks before it expires, that gives you time to decide if you can get it compliant or keep it registered in NSW.

So if i have a 4runner that is lifted 4 inches with a spring lift only (but doesn't look that tall), and the NSW rego is due in 3 weeks, and I'm moving to QLD in that time, should I rego it here in NSW, then transfer all 12 months of it to a QLD rego, or should i drive it up to Brisbane and rego it before my NSW rego runs out (March 14).
Which is the cheapest option?

You can not transfer your NSW rego to QLD. They are two different entities. And share nothing.mattyd wrote:So if i have a 4runner that is lifted 4 inches with a spring lift only (but doesn't look that tall), and the NSW rego is due in 3 weeks, and I'm moving to QLD in that time, should I rego it here in NSW, then transfer all 12 months of it to a QLD rego, or should i drive it up to Brisbane and rego it before my NSW rego runs out (March 14).

I would drive it up and attempt to get an RWC before you cancel the NSW rego. If you have doubts it will pass for a QLD RWC, but if you can obtain a NSW Pink slip before you drive up, then go for the Pink slip option if you want a registered car to drive if you need to do some temp mods to get a RWC in QLD.mattyd wrote:should i drive it up to Brisbane and rego it before my NSW rego runs out (March 14).

At the moment, (unless you come from Greenbank - JOKE ), it's a bit hard if you don't know someone in QLD to get an illegal modded 4wd a RWC.
Once it's passed, no more inspection unless you caught in a DOT sting or a copper decides to defect you.

If you have a 4in lift then I assume you aren't running original size tyres. This will also be a problem.
Also something that doesn't look 'too tall' to you will no doubt look huge to the RWC guy who only sees stock Forerunners.
I bought a Discovery in NSW and brought it to Qld.
All I did was go to NSW transport dept and sign something that said it was now mine even though the rego was still in previous owners name (went to the dept with the previous owner).
Then got a RWC in Qld and went to the local cop shop and registered it and handed the NSW plates to them.
I don't know if the previous owner got any rego money back but he took the rego off the price as it was useless to me.
