Unmodified Fuel and Turbo EGT

Post by azzad »

Ive just fitted a 2nd hand turbo dynamics setup to my TD42, I dont have an EGT yet so I havent touched the fuel delivery.

Its running at about 8-9 psi boost.

Approx 18mnths ago I had the injectors done and dynoed, so I know it was all setup correctly.

Should there be any problem in running like this, with std fuel delivery, other than it not going as good as it could?

My understanding from what Ive run is that more fuel = higher egt and more boost = lower egt so as im not running more fuel but am running more boost my egt should actually be quite low?

No problems at all, engine will run cooler and cleaner, but bugger all power increase over stock untill you turn the fuelling up.

wouldn't more boost with less fuel make the engine run leaner and therefore hotter?

Thanks Ben, after doing some more reading I think it will be pretty safe to wind the fuel up 1 turn, so I will probablly do it before driving it much more.

hokey, apparently not from what Ive read in regards to diesels. The more fuel you stuff in them the hotter they get.

Wound the fuel up last night, all good, wasnt able to test drive yet but will do that after work today.

What I did notice was that the idle speed increased, which i expected would happen, but it got to a point with the fuel screw were when I had the idle adjustment backed right off, I couldnt make it idle less than say 800 rpm. I checked the throttle cable was slack also. So I adjusted the fuel screw at a point which gives me around 700-800rpm with the idle screw backed right off. This as it turns out is about 1 full turn from were it started.

Puffs a bit off black smoke at idle when throttle blipped but when held at 3000 or so rpm its pretty clean.

i would get an egt guage asap or back the fuel off abit till you do , just to be safe , as mine is set the same and my egts will go past 600 (in the dump) if i dont keep an eye on it going up hills

Azzad,
I to have turbo fitted to 4.2 diesel making 13 psi boost but the pump remains untouched.

Did you turn the screw IN or OUT ?

How much more power did it make ?

Been thinking about giving it more fuel for some time now, it wont blow any smoke at any time,It goes quite well now but would be nice to have some more power.

Without EGT gauge, how do you know if your not melting pistons????

cheers

barmah bush, I wound it in about 1 turn which was also about the point I couldnt make it idle lower than 750rpm with the idle screwed backed right off.

Took it for a drive and it went very very well.

But without an EGT I decided to back it off to 1/2 turn.

At 1 turn in it would puff black smoke when you blipped the throttle but when held at say 3000rpm was clean. Smoke seems to be pretty much the same at 1/3 turn perhaps not as much cant really tell.

The next thing I have now noticed is with my vacumm hooked up to the clutch booster the clutch slips? Remove the vacum and the clutch is hard to push but the clutch doesnt slip?

Am going to check all adjustments and see how it goes.
