Mechnical Inspection! Is this Dodgy.

Hi Guys.

Quick query, I'm in the process of buying a vehicle from a dealer, He has told me that a mechanical inspection has been performed and provided me with the report.

Now red flags immediately went up as. the title of the report read

Production Line Reconditioning Report. Its not dated and there is no mention of the person/company who performed the report or any contact information.

Just venting I guess but does this seem dodgy to anyone or has anyone seen a report with the same title before and know what it is.

I say dodgey. If no-one is prepared to put there name to it, its worthless.

If the dealer is legit he'll have no problem with you taking it to a mechanic of your choice for a pre-purchase inspection

and if he does, walk away with hands in your pockets. dont listen to any "warranty" bullchit.. theres always another rig round the corner.

Probably done in-house, my 4wd safty cert was, I questioned something on it and the guy was nar it's all ok, it was with the breaks it looked like a zero or a 40 or 50% was writen down but it had been re-writen over it.

That was the only problem, I've fixed the breaks since then and everything else seems to be ok, thank god.

I ah wouldn't trust the in-house check report myself, unless you know of faults or need where common car/4wd faults are, for a petrol and/or diesel you might be able to judge for yourself anyway.


I would say though get that RACV check someone that will go through it with a fine tooth comb.

the RACQ still do these checks, write down every single problem on a car and they have 3 levels

looked up the RACV site they still do these checks but I think your've got to be a member

Years ago I did a paint rectification and detail inside and out for a vehicle to be sold. A prospective buyer had the RACV do an inspection. He said don't buy it as it has just had a full repaint, they must have just patched it up to make some money. I had only replaced the lower section of one guard due to rust and patched some rust on the scuttle. The rest was just care and technique as to how I do paint rectification. The RACV bloke still insisted it had a full repaint. I asked him what his trade background was, he didn't have one. How can someone judge something they know nothing about? Large car dealerships buy their RACV Inspected stickers.

When I was shopping for my GQ jensan 4wd or something got really upset when I told him the gearbox or clutch was nearly gone and I wanted 2k off the price. I decided that I didn't want the car but kept nit picking to see if I could get a good deal. they told me a rwc was worth $500 and when I said it's $70 for the fail sheet he was struggling to keep his cool.

don't lose site of the bigger picture when being excited about looking at a new car and take your time. if something doesn't smell right it probably isnt so walk away.

First rule when buying from a dealer: If his lips are moving then he's lieing to you. Dealers are just that.. 'Dealers' they will say anything to make a sale.

Arnt they the low klm fleet vehicles sold thru factory dealers at a big discount price?
If so then the report is done by a factory dealer. Either way all reports these days are dodgy. Probly a phone worthy anyway.

Jansen 4wd are dodgy as. I took them to consumer affairs over a bullbar they were supposed to supply me. He abused the hell out of me and consumer affairs over the phone. Guy at consumer affairs told me they had 12 disputes lodged against Jansens in the first half of 2007. Their warranties arent worth sh1t.

I had a RACV report done on a car i was looking at buying, the guy who did the report said it was the second worst car he had ever seen. Saved me quite a bit of money!

I ended up buying a better car elsewhere.
