Was it a toyota pump or after market job? Some after market pumps impellers don’t protrude into the block enough so don’t pump the water like it should.

put the factory mechanical fan with viscous clutch and proper fan shroud back on. electric fans do not pull air through the whole radiator and often do not move enough air. check also that you have the RIGHT thermostat - they are a bypass type and if you put one in without the bypass valve on it, 1/3 of your coolant flow will never reach the radiator.

I had an 85 model 2.4D Hilux with a CT20 Surf turbo, top mount intercooler.
Turned out the previous owner used a flexible hose for the radiator to get around the P/S pump. It had a wire coil running through, for strength I guess.
This coil corroded, broke up, and formed a nice big lump in the hose. Cooked it pretty quickly while doing 100km down the freeway. Check that your hose isn't blocked.
