Play in the steering and new Front Brake rotors: HJ61RG

Hi All,

After getting the HJ61RG (12HT) back from Pingelly I took it to a mechanic who did a full safety check. He found that there was some play in the steering(which I did notice on the way back from Pingelly) and the front brake rotors are .1mm under width.

Now what price should I be looking at for two new rotors with new pads $500??? Any recommendations on brand or just take it to a Toyota 4WD Recon centre and say fix it??
The play in the steering, according to the manual I have, there could be any one of five things that could cause it. Anyone had experience with this issue on this model?? Is there a common problem that occurs to cause it??

Any advice appreciated.

From memory DBA rotors are ~$100 each, and bendix pads ~$90 a set

Standard DBA rotors are about $65 ea, there are other cheaper brands.
Bendix 4WD (highly recommended) are about $92.
Thats $222 in parts so you can work out how much they are charging in labour.

Sterering freeplay could be movement in any of the tie rod ends or even slop in the steering box. Jack the front wheels up and grab a wheel at 3 and 9 o clock and rock it in and out while looking at the steering linkages(you might need an extra pair of hands here). You should be able to spot some movement in one or more of the steering joints. Otherwise take it to a reputable mechanic for an opinion.

Its all good saying its only $222 of parts, but if i was quoting that job there would be at least 2 hours labour ($200) plus a brake fluid flush/bleed, new hub seals etc...and that's not including that you may pull it apart and find the wheel bearings are shagged etc. $500 sounds about right to me. As for play in the steering, i would be asking exactly what they think is worn as a Landcruiser has many different areas it can wear.

Whats your point? I'm not saying $500 is too much. The bloke asked how much for 2 rotors and new pads. I simply gave him the prices on the parts and suggested that if he's been quoted $500 the rest will be labour.

ps: I'd charge 3 hrs ($999) and talk him into investing in some titanium wiper shims to go with the heavy duty halogen fluid his nan got him for christmas.

jezz dont know where you blokes shop but the local parts shop sells bendix 4x4 pads for less than $60 !!

I just quoted full retail, no doubt you can get them cheaper if you try.

That's the recommended retail, that's what a normal person off the street pays. I don't know why everyone who's isn't a mechanic thinks they should get trade price?

RAY185, my point is there is a lot more to the cost of a job then just the price of parts, everyone these days seems to think labour should be free...

Thanks for your help everyone. The prices you guys quoted give me a good starting point on expected cost. I have looked at Roodogs 4WD spares ebay store. $70 each for rotors and $60 for a set of pads(i'll ask what brand they are before purchasing). My expectation of cost of new rotors was alot more than around $100 each....so pretty happy with that.

Cheers for the steering play tip RAY185, I'll look into it. That, at the moment is a priority......I'd like to know the steering wheel is attached to the front wheels before I head to Kalbarri at easter!!
