Water Crossing without snorkel

What would be the maximum fording depth with a Standard Dual Cab Hilux WITHOUT a snorkel...?

Snorkel is coming - but recovery gear and UHF radio etc.. have priority.

Therefore I have to take it easy at crossings - and I am thinking top of tyres would be a conservative estimate.

Any suggestions??

Do you need to cross any deep water currently? there isnt that much of it around. but with a blind on the front, you should be ok for grill depth water, well in a patrol you are.. nto sure where the factory air intake is on a lux.

King River @ King Hut Track had water near to top of wheels a week ago. The long weekend coming is the king river at Sandy flat - so I can only assume there is a little more water there considering it has had a few more K's to gather up whatever is dripping out of the mountains. And the topo maps seem to indicate a more substantial river at that point.

And besides QLD seems to be copping a bit of water lately.. Maybe Vic could be next.

depends on vechile a bit.

our navara has the air inlet in the wheel arch which isn't to bad except there is a hole (factory) in the arch and gaps around the edge. so even splashing through puddles on the highways means water gets up into the filter. going through a creek you would have to be carefull not to splash water up around the arch (yeah right !). otherwise make sure the intake is at the highest point inside the engine bay.

I've had it come just over the bonnet in my rocky without a snork Flamin lucky I didn't get bogged in the deep part and it wasn't under long enough to fill the engine bay and start sucking in water. Just over the tires sounds like a good rule of thumb tho, no 4b's intake is going to be that low.

I've seen bow waves over the bonnet on vehicles without snorkles. They got through fine but the location of your air intake matters a lot. Is it possible to unplug intake parts to raise where it sucks from?

If you keep pushing forward then the water level in the engine bay is lower than outside.

This is too deep for a hilux with no snorkel, he did drive in too fast and the water surged over the bonnet and he lost momentum and the water filled the engine bay and pop goes the engine.



Probably top of tyres is good but being sensible helps

Thanks for that guys... I think I will stick with no higher than wheel arch to stay on the safe side. The Air intake for the Hilux is fairly high in the engine bay, which should be expected in a 4wd..

in my old surf the intake was behind the left head light which i found after i hydrod the motor

2000 mod pathfinder is stupidly low down below headlight if I remember at the crossing at Kings Hut on at rip I was leading once. Blind worked though.

pull the intake out, just have it feed straight into the box, that way you only get into trouble if the bonnet fills up with water, and then you are gonna stall anyway
