Pajero Challenge 2008
Moderator: evanstaniland
Was a little wet but dried out and we eventually had dust. Section 1, point 1 sorted quite a few out and that affected the rest of the section if you got that wrong. overall not a bad section.
Section 2 was way too vague with so many options. It was like choose your own adventure but with no way of knowing if you went the right way so there were people doing huge loops and backtracking looking for points that weren't there till the end of the section.
Section 3 and 4 were very straightforward with the navigation being the easiest it has been for the last couple of years with a few tricks secret checkpoints though. The tracks in 3 & 4 were better fun too. As far as placings go it could be anyone's, there were very mixed results on each section but overall we had a blast.

Ruffy - I had a PM from someone and was told about another person who bent a diff, steering box, sump and other major carnage just a half hour into the event (Wot the!) - let's call him Paj Boy so as not to embarrass him...
Cruiser Dude and I, on the other hand, drove Hummers full of tipsy bridesmaids...
Hobzee - One .. Paj Boy - Nil
But alas I did miss the great fun of the Paj. You too?

It was our first Challenge (And navigation event) too and after a pretty crap start we picked up and started doing pretty well. We thought we were in big trouble when the first plot was in the bush off the track
Section 2 was a bit hard for us, but we still managed to get a lot done, but sections 3 and 4 was much easier i thought. Even though we had the cut and run from 4.2 because we were running out of petrol (2 jerry cans next time)
But overall we had a really good time, meeting new people and having many laughs. Looking forward to doing a few Nav Runs this year now that we know what we're doing.
It was funny too because we wern't travelling that fast, but usually going the right way, to have people fly up behind you, we'd let them pass, then they came flying back the other way, then they'd pull in after you at the checkpoint
Oh and SS2 was carnage central/hilarious, all you had to do was go at walking pace, but people had the do it fast, including us SES

We had a shit weekend
Start of stage one really stuffed me. I don't know if i was off my game or what but i missed all the really important questions/points. By the end of S1 the clutch was dead and we spent the next 13 hours getting ourselves and the car home. Sounds like the rest of the courses were really good so i'm spewing

Bugger about the clutch Stu, guessing you where the guys in the Silver GQ.

We stuffed up from the first 500m. As we went up Fire line 2 instead of Foley Tk. But we had to make a donation of two questions to get the correct location so we could work out one of the NP's. As our intersection was wrong. But was a good drive. Thought our event may be over early though as we took the wrong line and bounced across the track and the front left wheel took a big hit.
But after that we where back on track.
But made a huge stuff up later on on S1 as we got to the bottom of Harrys tk and went right around 15mile. Where as we should have gone left. So missed out on a question and a secret check point.
S2 started alright, we expected worse from Mr Pepper. But had a rough idea of where we were going.
We pulled up behind the hummers in there broke disco (out with water pump issues). From there we worked out the Mt in the photo.
We had a look at the dugout. But due to being slack and not get our torch out ofthe car we borrowed Hotties torch which was pretty ordinary. This is my reason for stuffing up. As we didnt think it looked right. How wrong where we.
Then we couldnt find the termite mound. But we did find the tree to measure. So that was a plus.
We also couldnt find the dog's head looking track. Until we had missed it by ages. So had to make some guesses there.
But from the next check point we where on fire. Pretty sure we were spot on from there.
S3 was plotted in the wet. But since the Procomp tent was vacant we used there table (thanks guys). Think we did well on this stage. Had to do Fireline 2 again. But this time there where spankers standing where we had to drive. So I think we scared someone. But we made it up in one go.
Most of section 3 was pretty straight forward. Only thing that was a disapointment was that some of the questions where partially hiden. Also made mention of keep left after coming up Short cut 2. Which got use a secret CP. But we kept left which would have made for a more interesting spot to put the question. As a large number of people went the quick way, around the hills. Not keeping left.
Then the next question after the CP3.1 we couldnt find and neither did a number of other teams who went the same way. So dont know why it was hidden and we are 99% sure we went the wrong way. As a number of good teams went the same way. So did anyone find a question on Monument tk?
Maybe where just blind.
S4
Started bad we couldnt find the croc and entered the SCP the wrong way. Stupid thing was I knew it was wrong, but was to tired to realise we had stuffed up. So just went thru it the wrong way.
Everything was then going the well till we got to the next checkpoint. Where we got stuffed around for an hour. nearly had to cut and run. But I think the question was in the wrong spot. As I am guessing it was on the top section where you veer left. But since it is unmarked its not the shortest marked distance. so should be used. But since the question wasn't on the other parts that we where plotted to. I guess it was there. But after getting boxed in at that CP we couldn't go back and check it.
Things went well from there except for getting stuck and having to pull the cable out.
Then needed to do some real fast driving to make time up. And made it into the final CP with 1min to spare.
Overall we did alright. Think we will only be good for a top15 at best. We just made to many little mistakes and 1 or 2 huge ones. But did finish the event having had heaps more fun and laughs than the previous 2. Must just be that area.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
We found a question on Monument track, cant remember what it said though... What car were you in?
Thanks for the detailed report its good to know we werent the only ones to make stupid little mistakes Our most embarresing stuff up was not reading that there was a checkpoint at NP 4.07 (or maybe 4.08) and driving within 30m of it and kept going straight past Got back to camp and noticed we were a stamp short!
We had a great weekend though, night stages we the most fun. Was our first Pajero Challenge and cant wait for next year
Just trying to work out why I havnt dont it befor this year.

Its not a bundy!
We didn't keep left after the "Exit South" at this point, and went up the firebreak. Well, it just got steeper and softer the further up we went until we stopped with all 4 spinning digging holes. Backed down in the dark and tried again (but kept left). The marshalls at the CP seemed to be amused that we'd tried to go up the hill.turps wrote:Also made mention of keep left after coming up Short cut 2. Which got use a secret CP.

I saw no reason to head south from Big River road - was that the first projection NP? (~8.9 km 160deg from winch hill or similar?). I must have really munted that projection up - a number of times.

I was Navi number 1 in the greenish paj. We where chatting on S2 just after working out the distanct along that track where the photo was taking. Before heading back to the dugout to head around 15mile tk.tom_286 wrote:We found a question on Monument track, cant remember what it said though... What car were you in?

Smithy,
You werent the only team to leave there check sheet. I tried to keep ours on a clipboard. So it was easy to keep track of.
Only damage we had was abit more pinstripping and a bashplate that almost came off. But it was doing that last year. Nothing some cable ties and wire couldn't fix. But there is a wheel that may need looking at. We hit the side of a rut very hard at one stage.
But I know of someone that had rear door issues and problems with a inner guard.

Steady on now Pickle - they'd all been sweating thier Butts off since 9.30 in the morning - some of them may have been rather ripe

Well this was our first Paj challenge as well. Found sections 3 and 4 easier to plot, but didn't find the croc... same thing with the dugout, didn't go alll the way in to look. The checkpoint with the coloured squares.... well "go" was the first word out of my mouth... oops - blew that one. Night driving was fun adn some really good tracks - all in all we had a great time..
