Would appreciate any input into which of the following two winches I should go for: Warn M8274-50 vs Ramsey RE10,000.
The truck in question is a 1992 Disco 5 door, usually heavy laden with tools, recovery equipment, camping equipment, used as a daily driver, a joy-tool, and geared for competition use in the near future. It will be sitting on 36" SX (32" TSL radials now), ARBs front/rear, XHD drivetrain, and custom bumpers.
I know that the hi-mount Warn has a lot of advantages, but I dislike two of its features:
1. I have heard of the brake assembly flying off under hard use. Safety for me is paramount.
2. It is rated at 8,000lbs. Granted, that may be enough, but this is borderline sometimes.
The RE10 is a great design, but SLOW.
Would appreciate any insight, or help, and any one who can refute the Warn disliked features. My heart is going for teh Warn, but then again, the winch is to save my ass, so that part will be choosing!

I have a disco as a daily driver and know how heavy they are, for this reason alone i would be going for the 10,000 ramsey.
The 8274 is a very fast winch ( i use one on my hilux for comps) but i think would be under powered for you.
If you want to get a WARN then why not get one of the heavier models like a 10000 pound Low mount WARN.
I know ARB reconmends nothing less than 10000 for a landcruiser or nissan patrol so i would imagine a disco would be the same.
As for reliability my 8274 was one of the first ever made and is still going strong and i have never seen a well maintained WARN fail.

The cost of both of these winches is almost the same, and the bumper is going to be custom made, so both can be accepted. I just need a "Devil's advocate" to point the bad things of each of these winches from experience, as all I have is some of the Warn, and none of the Ramsey...

Ok a 8000lb might be to small for you and a 10 000lb is way to slow for comps. So what about a warn low mount 9500lb HS. They have a no load speed of 62 ft/min as to the high mounts 73.4 ft/min and then at 6000lb line pull the 9500lb has 9.31ft/min and the high mount has 9.50ft/min.
I think that this winch would be more then adequite for your needs and will also suit you when you want to start doing comps.
I myself am buying a new winch for my lux very soon. I will be buying either a 8000lb high mount or more then likely a 9500lb HS as it will fit on my lux easier then a high mount and is about $500 cheaper. Plus the ratings aren`t that much different. About the only benefit I can see with a high mount over the 9500 HS is it is much easier to modify the free spool for incab opperation.

Oh and about the Ramsey winchs, I know someone that bought a 9000lb HS ramsey winch new and within 2 years it was completely fark inside, to the point of needing a new motor.
Look at it this way, which one has more sales every year? Now why do you think this is? Personly I`d never buy anything other than a Warn winch.

I'd still go with the 8274, Its very popular in competitions because its fast but also its probably one of the most reliable winches you can get. Since you are not competing then the speed is not the issue so when you get really stuck use a pully block = 16000lbs

the yanks use them on fullsize chevs and suburbans, in big snow drifts and stuff

also there is a simple mod to the 8274 to stop the brake flying off under load and to stop the freespool lever coming out too!

Most of the mods are for competition users, the ones I have seen are:
Either split pin or a remote air drive for freewheel
Forced air cooling for the winch motor
Modified brake
Extra bracing behind the drum
Some of the guys are pulling 2-3 tonne
My old 8074 is to save my butt not competition and is working very well in factory form

I guess that is what I will be doing. Until I will ind the need for it, I will keep the front 8274-50 stock.
However, since I intend to run 2 winches (with the RE10 in the back, install mid-ship), then I am seriously thinking of getting the polyutherene (or was that the material for the bushes?) rope and aluminium fairlead (from Spidertrax).
