New gearbox whines like a pom.
New gearbox whines like a pom.
I just put a new reco gearbox in my Sierra and it is really whiney.
I figured it might just be because it's new and needs to wear in but it is quite loud.
Has anyone else replaced their gearbox lately and had a similar noise?
I also replaced the pilot bearing in the flywheel, the clutch and the thrust bearing. Whole lot is new.

Yeah I think I will. I just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience with a reco'd box before I do. It all runs perfectly and feels great it just whines.
It doesn't do it when the clutch pedal is in so i'm pretty sure it isn't the clutch.
Thanks guys I'm going to check the thrust bearing out first as it seems to disappear slowly as I push the clutch pedal in. It also doesn't do it in 4th or 5th gear for some reason or on deceleration only on acceleration.
Really weird?? I don't want to take the box back without checking all avenues first. If it's not the thrust bearing I'm pulling it out and taking it back for a refund.

its the bearings inside the gearbox, gearbox bearing, had similar prob but it was coz it was a old wornout gearbox.
who did the reco? i just want to know who to avoid. its obviously not recond, whatever they say... unbelievable, isnt it...

Got it from Tempe Tokyo spares in Sydney.
It was looking a bit suss when I got it. The thrust bearing was worn out and one of the locater studs was missing. Looks like they just spray painted a used box and tried to palm it off as a reco. I'm taking it down there tomorrow morning to kick some ass. Wanted to do it today but too busy.

i hope they will at least give your money back but should also pay u extra for wasting your time taking the gearbox in and out and stuffing around with them.
u can sort of tell next time if a gearbox is noisy by spinning the centre shaft (where the throwout bearing goes) with your fingers and if it feels smooth and quiet, its prob good. i bet if u spin this one or your old one it wont be perfectly smooth.

Yeah I'm really pissed off about it. They are going to have one angry person down there tomorrow. I'll definately be testing the next one out a bit more before I install it. My buddy is going to give me a hand to pull it out on Saturday.
It'll be much faster process this time round as I know exactly what needs to come out first and I won't have to work on any tight bolts for 1/2 an hour etc.

Took the car in this morning. Pleasant surprise the guy was really good about it.
Apologised profusely and explained that they didn't reco the boxes and got it from an external mob.
Didn't muck me about and is getting me a new box to pick up Saturday when I drop the dud one back.

He was good about it so no need to enflame the situation.
I think he will probably be having a word with his reco'd box supplier though.
I'm glad it was the box and not the clutch. The box is a pretty easy in and out job but the clutch is a bit more fiddly. Wouldn't want to have to pull it all out again.

searching for wheel bearings will give a run down on the tools and bits required.. torque wrench, 50mm hub socket, might want to do king pins while the bearings are out.. saves pulling it all apart again in 6 months time..

x2 If you can afford it, it is worth doing king pin bearings and all the seals while you have it apart. And even wheel bearings.... if they need it. A thorough wash out and regreasing of the cv's also. The cv's and swivel hibs take black Moly grease. The wheel bearings take red or blue standard wheel bearing grease.
