hi all as the header says... i prefer petrol over diesel but please throw all advice my way including common faults, things to look for when buying, prices on new motors gbox etc and aftermarket and factory accesories availability cheers shaun ps also offroadability of course

If buying a petrol
I`d only get the injected 3F wouldn`t even bother with the carbied one.

If getting the 4.5 twin cam (as I am getting when I find the write one) don`t get one with duel fuel as the heads don`t like it. These motors are also every heavy on fuel but go hard and tow really well.

If buying a desiel one then I don`t know of really anything big to watchout for but I`m shore there will be something that somebody on here will point out.

Look for cracks on the frame around the steering box and cracks in the body around all doors, pillars and in the roof line (mainly if had a roof rack). I have also heard of them cracking around the body mounts if they have been used for hard 4x4ing.

With so many having had extras of all sorts fitted it would be best to find one with some on it, Bullbars are the most popular thing to have been fitted. So might as well get one with it allready on there and save having to buy one yourself.

I am buying one for a family car 1st (need 6 min seater as we have 4 kids) then comes the family 4x4 next after that its a tow rig for my lux :D With all this in mind I want a GXL 4.5 twin cam auto with a min of a ARB winch mountable bullbar. After that it will be getting a winch (the on my lux now) a front airlock (as I have one for it allready) siderails and steps (I have a disabled child) and then a couple of other small things.

You can get a 4.2 Diesel VX with all the pretty bits including factory lockers front and rear starting at NZ$20000. Ive seen petrol GX 5speed models here for $16000.

Maybe if you jump the ditch you can stuff one in you hand luggage :lol: :lol:

we got a 1991 80 series diesal with the barn doors and it has done nearly 300 k and we have not had to do a thing to it cept timing belts etc just as long as you change the oil regularly you wont have a problem and we have been all over australia and havent had a single problem with it

No I haven`t Mick. I`ll only tow the lux with it maybe 3 times a year so I don`t think it`ll be a big broblem if it does, plus I`ll just put a cooler or 2 in there.

Go to www.autotrader.com.au and do a serach on 1992 to 1997 and from $15000 to $20000 and see just how many come up.

I havent heard of any problems with them either. I was just curious. Towing my bike around in commodores and falcons we used to get the trans hot enough that it would lock itself into top gear and not change at all until it cooled down. The trailer weighed around a 1 tonne i suppose.
I am not a fan of autos for towing.

Sounds like you need a proper tow vehicle then.
A 2.8TDI Paj will tow just about anything, guys in my club are towing around big arsed caravans and boats and are absolutely wrapped with them especially the fuel economy. I was dubious initially but they all say they are very happy.

Dont race anymore so it aint a problem. But they were company cars with free fuel and we didnt have to pay for it if it shit itself so didnt care. If it was our own car it would be different.

DAD has got an 92 GXL and it is F#*Ken arsome it has 4 inch lift kits. He has 33 but run 30 on road cause he tight. It goes off. Other then that it is pretty standed
But it is arsome

be careful with the gearboxes (manuals), they are always notchy and had a problem with 2nd gear. toyota did a double syncro 2nd gear to try to fix this problem. I have rebuilt 1 box and seen several others that have had simillar problems too.
me personally I like the partrols as they have bigger stronger diffs and gearboxes and a nice ladder type chassis with good jacking points for on the hoist
oh sh#t, not more dents :D
