help me decide on next 4wd(60 or gq)

hey fellas,

im looking into purchasing my nex 4wd, i used to have a 60 series sahara, which i found to be a good truck, although i did break pretty much everything.

im tossing up between 2 trucks, ither a 60 series again, or a gq,( i dont want anything small like a zook) as im looking to spend only about 5 grand on the purchase price of the truck, and if i can get a diesel all the better, but i will probably replace what ever motor that comes with the diesel of that model.

i only want the truck as a week end warrior, so comfort isnt a huge issue, tuffness is, i want to be able to tackle some really tough terrain,( lots of mud, rocks and hills) and i know both trucks can do it, if built properly, and in the end it really only comes down to ether coils or leafs(which doesnt exactly bother me too much), as much of the trucks will be replaced (diffs, cvs, transfer gears) stuff like that,

i plan on choping what ever i get into a ute, as a wagons is bugger loads cheeper, than buying a ute straight out but cops to much damage in the rear end, running 35/36s and alot of gaurd choping, and custom fab work,

but id like to hear from people (espcialy the ones biased towards ether one) as much as i can about both rigs.

with ether truck, im not planning on much lift, if i could get out of it with none i would, if i can enlarge the inside of the wheel arches to stop tyre scrubing i will, but im also assuming that a bit of the scrubing would be on the chassi, and i dont really want to do a body lift(which wont clear the chassi any ways)


if any one can give me ther points of view id really appreciate it,

the only thing a 60 is good for these days is pilfering diffs for a rock buggy

unless it has a 12ht inwhich case it will be way over priced and the gq will win again

if you want a deisel spend the bit extra n buy one, it is far cheaper and easier to buy then convert.

only got to look under to see whats the toughest, gqs standard have a pretty solid drive train, bigger than the 60

are you in queensland?

60 series are always rusty..... GQs have some rust. coils beat the shit out of leafs ( ive had both) and GQs handle 3 times as good as a sixty.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown

sadly i sold off my GQ for a 60 series 2h diesel but has the 61-62 body on its rails ,

GQ had 10 billion problems with it electrical, rust, mechanical

more room better on feul , mostly surface rust with couple of holes
but hey for 3g cant complain too much

As a huge fan of all pre 100 series cruisers, Im voting GQ.

So much easier to make work and more capable stock. High kilometre diesels are going for 5k or less.

If I was to buy a 60, it would have to be the 12ht and they're hard to find under $5000 anyway. Go the GQ and you're years in front.

cheers guys, sadly my old 60 was a 12ht :( lol..... i should have kept it,

any ways, i know of a turbo diesel gq some where in the western suburbs, traded in to a dealer, with a blown diff and no reg, goin for under 3. but hey right this minute im not ready to buy lol....

well if i was to go the gq, i still dont want to lift the thing much, and i dont know what i can and cant fit in there wheel wells standard, like i know that 33s fit on a 60 with no scubing at standard hieght, now if i want to run 35/36s what is the absolute least amount of lift i need???(without body lift) and i know suspension doesnt help with tyres scrubing out, but i was hoping to get outa it with only a 2 inch lift in suspension if any at all. but i doubt it would fit right at stock hieght, or am i absoutely dreaming?

33's wont fit a gq at standar height with no scrubbing............... only because a gq has 2 times the flex straight out of the box.

basically with a gq no matter what you do with a wagon it will scrub on the rear if it has wheel travel no if no but no mabys its just the facts, but it wont cause you any issues and your chopping it eventually anyway.

on the front end you can fit 35's stock if you space the front arms forward a little but personally id just trim the front gaurds to suit, cutting gaurds/ quaters on a gq is very easy and can be done by anyone who can strike an arc with a mig

you will easily get 35's on with a set of 2 inch coils, 80 series bump stops and a minor trim of the front gaurds and rear quaters

GQ for sure, I've a mate I go wheeling with, His wepond of choose is a 60 with 2" lift 33" muds, efs shock and mine is a GQ TD42 old injectos(read black smoke screen) factory spring and shock from 91 with 31" mud. The moral of this story is I'm always sent in first and normaly running out his winch to get anywere :armsup: :armsup: GO THE GQ

GQ

Coils, more flex std, more modded stuff available 2nd hand, more stable, stronger driveline, more comfort (not that it matters to you - but can't really hurt if it doesn't compromise anything)
Better off getting the diesel from the start, get a high miler for cheap and if it goes bang its a lot easier to replace with another diesel rather than pulling out a good petrol and changing it to diesel.

bager thanks for that respons, was the info i was looking for, im a 4th year fitter and turner, and weld all the time at work, my capabiltiys reach far beyond that for chopping a wagon(on the welding side the figuring out where to cut will be diffrent how ever lol) way i figure it, time and planing will see me through it.


so just a bit of triming up front and half a wagons worth up back., sounds good to me, also i know it will be easyer to buy a diesel out right rather than buying a petrol and replacing with a diesel, but if a diesel doesnt come along, its not much to pull a motor and box and slot it back in, onyl thing would be running fule lines, but i plan to move the wagons tank to under the tray any ways,

GQ would be the more reliable one out of the two.
Great offroad ability, more comfort being a coily and great aftermarket support!
