which chevy v8 to put in gu wagon

Post by offroader-rama »

I am building a gu wagon mainly for towing a car trailer and touring but capable at the same time it has 5 inch springs 2dextreme arms 2 inch body 35's air lockers etc...
I am planning chev, kitted 4sp auto and 85% gears i have 4.1's at moment but may change this if needed I brought the kit from marks today for engine auto and a set crawler gears.
What i need help for is what chev do i run with 350, 383, 454 etc... it will be LPG dedicated and what diff ratio will work best.
the gu wieghs a shit load and as i am going auto and have crawler gears i think i should conentrate on torque vs economy ( !! I know silly thing to put in here, ecomony  ) any way a 454 will give me balls of torque over a 350 but will it be to big a price from economy will a 350 be enough and if I go 383 then it has to built what kit and by whom etc... I want it reliable for every day driving most of importantly i dont want to do it twice.
 Of course i want to show of in a chev gu but i dont have to be the fastest and the best.
who has done this what did you learn from it

cheers

Gen 4..I think you can get them for about 4.5K in the crate through Holden. That is what a mate told me as he is thinking of putting one in his 5.7 2000 club sport.

I think they are a terrific motor. Torquey, gutsy but docile.

454 for sure, its going to have heaps more torque that either of the other two and in standard set up there they will last a long time if treated correctly.

Never seen a 383 that didn't have problems and a carbie 350 just dosent do it for me. No where near the power in standard form ( which is what i'm assuming you want )

The problem with all 3 engines that you have listed is that once tricked up they can be hard to deal with, specialised tuners etc.

Yeah power is what i want, after spending so much money converting it, it has to be better than whats available standed and a 4.8ltr is pretty dam good i want this to be better than 4.8ltr of course.
As for carby it'll be straight lpg i may keep a carby aside if needed for emergencys etc.. There is no reason why it cant proform like a injected v8 with the lpg but a whole lot more simple to maintain.

Change of plans today and i am going 5 sp manual to keep it simple looks like 454 is out unless i go indivdual constructed vehicle so 383 is looking very good at this point. A 350 is to ordanary I have had 3 now i want some thing different.
