X3 - you can buy swift motor for cheap and swap your accessories
(sump, cam, dissy drive, starter, flywheel etc) over. Swift motors are usually newer and in better nick than sierra.

1.6/1.3 seem to work pretty well but there is a fair bit of work/$$$ - adapter, engine mount and clutch/flywheel/starter etc.
no, I don't think it will be possible to put a GTI in for $2K.

2K would be pushing it, to do it right you'd want the angle drive which is $300 alone and if you can't do the work yourself you've got little hope otherwise maybe if you get a cheap motor and do all the work but doubtfull. It's not something that should be done with an aim of such a low budget cause things never go to plan no matter how easy the job is

i have a gti motor i just bought off ebay. it cost me $200. it is just a bare motor in need of a big end rebuild.
i heard that you can swap the head and internals from the 13b to the 13a.
i was going to do this wit hmy 89 sierra but i came across a 90 model 1.6L twin cam corolla complete for $300
therefore no longer in need of the gti motor. im happy to part with it for $150 if your keen.
you would need to get a ecu and wiring harness i got quoted $200 for these if i stripped them from the car, throttle body, you would probably want to run an original fuel pump too.
i didn't look into it too much when i bought the motor i lept at the idea of it .
i came across the corolla less than a week later so i havn't had the chance to look at the motor properly.
im in penrith nsw if your keen. i can strap it to a pallet and send it if needed (if you want to pay for the transport)
