i would try a more recent gearbox, you want a box that will handle fast gearchanges. a built auto is good for this, or typically a more modern gearbox will shift faster. the 60 box is a H55F which is the same as the 45 series 5 speeds. a slow shift from first to second on a steep hill causes you to virtually come to a stop, losing all forward motion and liable to a lot of wheelspin when you finally find second. i cannot comment on the strength of the H55F, but i know a Turbo 400 would be good for your engine. i was going for a manualised Turbo400 behind a LS1 in my winch comp rig. i switched to a 289 Windsor and bought an adapter to mate the T400 to the 289.
just my 2C
