when i bled the box on my 4runner, i had the motor idling (so steering pump running) and one of those supercheap one-man bleeder hoses on the bleed screw so i could see when the air bubbles had all gone. No fluid would come out of the hose unless the pump was doing some work which was when i was turning the steering wheel from lock to lock. But the fluid pump rate increased when i held it on a lock so this must be where the pump is doing the most work and the engine idle dropped a bit at this point too.
yeah its obvious but are you making sure you keep the reservoir topped up as you try to bleed it? its like brakes or hydro clutch. Once the reservoir runs dry have to start all over again.
Went out today to have another look... i could see why i couldn't get it to bleed the belt had come off the pump, a rag i had in the engine bay cleaning up some of the fluid found its way to the belt and knocked it off
