Hilux injector timing
Can anybody please tell me how far is the optimum for advancing the injector timing on a 2.8 hilux? i.e how far should the aligning marks be moved.

What is the pump now set to compared to internal pump wear and engine wear and your current fuel economy performance?
Just rotate it clockwise, looking from the rear, to advance it. Do it in stages and record your results each time. Acceleration (off mark, increase from 50KPH, from 100KPH), black smoke, fuel KMS per litre, etc.
You could take it to a dyno place and do it there.
Get back to us with your results!

Thanks for the info fella's, what I was mainly trying to find out was if damage could be done by advancing it a little.
I have been told but don't know if it is true that Toyota intentionally retarted the injection pump timing on these motors to make them quieter but lost efficiency by doing so.

I don't think that it would cause damage. On the bad side, it may be more smoky, or could rattle a bit more or become inefficient when it comes to economy. Could go the other way too. there is only one way to set the timing, and the procedure is in the manual (Gregorys, Ellerys, factory, etc). you NEED a dial gauge with a special adaptor, and it NEEDS to be pretty close to the factory spec - more advance will make it knock and retarding it will make it smoke and lose power.
trains, the timing IS adjusted by rotating the pump relative to the timing case, but it has to be done with the right tools.

I understood that with the pump being set on the bench, aligmnent with the marks when installing it would be pretty much on the money.
edited to add.
Tho if I had the gear, I would then check it and set it finally when in the vehicle.
The tools are available from fleabay to do this, just do a search for diesel tools.
