anyone enigineered a 5.7L in QLD (defender)
ok so getting closer to a heart transplant for the wombat (1986 private import defender 90)
I have an engineer that will allow me to go to 5L, but more interested in going 5.7L (GenIII). not that keen on a 5L dunnydore donk, my mechanic tells me his stroked rover 3.9's (4.4-4.5L) will eat a 5L all day every day, mind you this is based on a race track in a Triumph TR7 against c'dores, etc - yes i know weight advantages, etc.
at this stage i'm thinking of rover and ZF - mainly for ease of install.
Does anyone know of any series/county/defender's in QLD that have a donk with greater displacement then 5L?
I Have heard i can apply to have e 'relaxation' but haven't looked into this yet.
I have also heard that the QLD DOT are changing the laws for engine swaps again in the next few months and my engineer doesn't know if they will increase or decrease the allowable displacement difference.
any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Cant comment on the QLD issues but I dont fancy the ZF lasting behind an LS1 without some serious upgrading. When I looked into it I found it was cheaper to drop in a toughened 4l60e than upgrade the ZF. Added bonus is it works off the LS1 computer.
If memory serves me correctly the standard torque rating of the ZF is less than 400NM. 4l60e isnt that much better but a heap cheaper to upgrade. If you insist on the ZF i think Castlemain Rodshop do an LS1 to ZF adapter.

Sam - I drove a mate's V8 90 (stock disco 3.9) a while back. It is pretty much stock and probably very light - but this think had so much power you could spin all 4 wheels in 4th on WA pea gravel. I spoke to an engineer in QLD recently about putting a 350 in my 110. The book says the max is 5.0 and he wasnt prepared to certify anything bigger.
Up to 5.7 is allowed in a RR - strange given the 110 has bigger brakes....
I will just keep the 4.3 stroker - it goes well enough. More power would always be nice but the handling and braking capabilities of the vehicle are probably at the safe limit now.......

What book might this be? I was told I could put a 350 in my 110 two years ago maybe the rules have changed I was also told that you can only double the capacity of the original engine which mine was a 2.5L which would make sense so Sam you could put a 8.0L in the wombat

I enquired 2-3 years ago about a 327 chev into my County. The engineer looked up a book to find that the 110 County could only be approved with a maximum of 5L engine whereas the RR could be approved with a 5.7L. Hence I installed a 307 instead.
Apparantly it had to do with what classification the vehicle was brought into the country under. The County came in under a different classification to the RR which allowed less tax to be applied to the vehicle. Unfortunately, when it came to Qld DOT rulings, they used these same classifications to differentiate between vehicle types and apparently this is why the County can only get a 5L motor. - So I was told.
Maybe the new NCOP will change this - once it is implemented in Qld.

The rules havent changed - yet. There is talk QLD will be adopting uniform national standards in which case they might. The 'book' is the Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Modification. It needs updating big time as the list of vehicles and max engine capacities is way out of date. Basically, if an engineer in QLD approves something outside whats on the list they are putting their a*s on the line big time. Its not worth it for a couple of hundred $$$. Typically we pay a lot less than southern states for mod plates, one of the reasons is our system is so prescriptive.Hally wrote:What book might this be? even with stroking a motor past the 5L mark, i want everything to be legal,
last thing you want is to be involved in a fatal crash one day and have my ass on the line due to wanting a bigger donk, there are alot simpler tests to do to check capacity then pulling the head off too, and its not like it would pass as a factory motor.
