diesle pump ajustment

Post by 88pajero »

My 4runner is blowing a fair amount of black smoke under load and I had a mehanic tell me that all it is is the diesel pump needs ajusting.
So how do I go about turning it back a bit?

did you fiddle with the pump to make it smoke or did it just get like that over time? the first thing to check is the injectors, pop them out and take them to a diesel shop, most will do free or cheap injector testing (it only takes about 20 seconds per injector). If the injectors are good, then your pump might need adjusting. the chances are though, that your injectors are crook, and a fresh set of nozzles will be required to bring them back to their former glory. this will set you back about $60 - $80 per injector. be thankful you drive a 4 cylinder, indirect injected diesel.

Na, I didnt fiddle. Ive only had it for just over a month, its been doing it the whole time. I was going to get the injectors checked but the mechanic reckons its just running a little rich.

But that aside, I am definately greatful that I have a 4cyl under my foot. Only half the repairs of what I really want.

if its only smoking just on full throttle its proberly overfueling a bit, fairly common. however if its smoking at 1/2-3/4 throttle then certainly injectors would be suspect.

assumoing its 2.8 then on the back of the pump under a small cover is the adjusting screw with lock nut. sorry can't remeber which way you turn it.

also don't forget check you air ways are clean and not restrictive (dirty air filter, choked manifolds, valve clearences etc)

Sure is the 2.8. Shes only smokin under full throttle or under load. Its quite happy to cruse along and excellerate under gentle revs.
Ill check the airways today and then pay a little more attenton to when its smoking and possible try turning the pump back a little. If all else fails Ill get the injectors checked.

clock-wise to richen , anti clock-wise to lean it off, use a 1/4 drive ratchet with a 6mm socket (i think the lock nut is 10mm from memory) do 1/8 turn ( one click on ratchet) take it for a drive looking at smoke, little smoke under load is ok , but should be just noticable
might also pay to check pump timing. pick up a service manual for details.
with the change to low sulfur diesel lots of pumps have been off and serviced and may not have been timed/ tuned as well as they could be
