Want to do a Spring over axle conversion

Post by BabyGodzillaGTi-R »

Hi guys just wondering how many ppl in this forum has gone down this route.
Doing it on a F85 rocky.
What i plan to do is to swap the entire Hilux LN106 drivetrain over to the Rocky such as the 3L engine, gearbox, TC, axles and suspension.
Any idea if the leafsprings the same length of the Hilux?
I wonder what's the axle width between LN106 and Rocky coz i plan to do SPOA. Don't want to end up testing my Rocky's roll cage. LOL

Another concern is how would you guys set up the steering.
I'm no DIY guy i admit but always yearning for more info.
So just doing some research now b4 i reach the point of no turning back.
Quite a nice place to start with http://www.ih8mud.com/cruisertech.php
So what's your opinion guys out there?
Cheers.

Entering your monster Rocky for RFC this year?
I wish i've the budget to enter the RFC.
I'm only a fresh or to be precise a half baked grad.
I'm using the LN106 drivetrain is because i've a Hilux that's off road ready but a real hassle to run as it requires to be inspected every 6 months being commercial registered and due to local red tape...
So i'm thinking of wrecking it and transfer all the goodies over to my Rocky.

If i wanted to build a RFC monster Malaysian style i would be running a Bundera gearbox and TC with PTO to run our super mad but dangerous "God's winch". Volvo C303 portal axles, and Range Rover style links, and a 15BT or 3UZFE. Or better still do up a Classic Rangie and throw all the fancy stuff from Maxi drive catalogue But money is not an option...
I'm no hard core junkie and can't afford to do so.

Look on the bright side guys if I do the drivetrain conversion on my Rocky, rest assured there will be a rare Rocky Detroit locker up for sale hehehe.

Yes its a rare item. As A K&S locker is around $3K (AUD) it will be very interesting to see if those that want a Rocky locker ACTUALLY want a locker or if its just hot air.

Even though its second hand, I'd guess it uses similar spares to other Detroits so if it ever needed overhaul it shouldn't be an issue.

Given its rare but second hand I'd guess $1500(AUD) would be a starting point ( IMO ).
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.
