1999 GU 4.2 After market turbo & tyres?

Post by GQGasPig »

Hi All,

Have been on the look out for a new truck and stumbled across a 99 GU DX 4.2 diesel with 155,000Km on the clock for $25,000 in a yard near my outlaws place. It includes winch compatible bull bar and full length roof rack.

1. Do these beasts successfully take to an aftermarket turbo and 3 inch dump pipe and exhaust?

2. What would it cost to get a reasonable turbo and exhaust fitted?

3. Can I swap the 15x8 steel rims with 33 inch Cooper ST's on my GQ across to the GU?

I need some answers fast.

Thanks in advance.

tyres will fit, motors are good turboed but get quotes for the kit. Do a search as the turbo stuff has been covered alot n there is some good info about the kits.

yes to all your questions

I have a 2000 model Dx that was originally non-turbo and after a lot of time and a bit of cash i now have 120rwkw at 15 pound boost with 37' tyres.
so yes you can do a lot with that motor .
just a heads up with the fuel pump it will have no boost compansater and can be very hard to convert (it is basicaly a gq pump) so
1. hunt around for a good desiel mech (that can convert) or
2. a td42 turbo fuel pump that allready will have an 11mm rotar and boost compansater
the later will be easier

as for cost you can start at around $3500 (for a real basic kit fitted) and go up over $10,000 depending on how much HP you want ,but a basic kit and no pump mods will only see you get around 85rwkw.
Happy to give you more ideas if it helps as i have been playing with mine for 5yrs and have come across many of the pitfalls the hard way .
off road "size DOES matter"

Thanks for the responses.

1. Is 83kw at the R/wheels enough to push 33's and still safely overtake a road train towing my 1 tonne camper trailer?

2. Is an aneroid a must have?

Cheers
