Potential GQ owner questions
Potential GQ owner questions
Hey guys i know these questions have been done to death and i tried looking for them but gave up after an hour of searching and hope you guys can answer the few questions i have...
For mainly touring.....
-Will a 2" suspension lift be suitable for 33.12.5 tyres
-How many kms could you possibly get out of a tb42 before you need work and without a compression test what signs would you watch out for
-With a small budget what modifications would you do to a std tb42... Exhaust etc...
Thanks guys appreciate it.....

around 300k tb42s start lookin worse for wear
depending on maintence and owner and driving styles
small budget keep your eye on the forsale section ...
theres always extractors for tb42/td42 they're the same
prolly pick some up for $200
rest of the exhaust will prolly cost ya $400 done at a shop
suggest getting the cooling system flushed and radiator cleaned out, thermostat and check water pump as well ... will prolong the life of the TB head
before ya buy it do some figure 8s then lock it in low4 and do some figure 8s to look for anything clunky
get dirty and get under it and have a look ... you'll see what kinda use it's had if there is any scratches under it

A speed camera would have prevented that!
Went on that patrol site and looked up buying a second hand gq so i have an idea what to look out for...
Do you need castor correction with a 3" lift?
What other things would you do with a new purchase.... Gonna get extractors, exhaust ( what size exhaust ), electronic ignition...snorkel maybe...
I know they r thirsty but can u do anything to get it maybe slightly better...no im not going lpg.....

If its for touring, I wouldnt bother with more than a 2" lift and 31's.
It will drive a lot nicer and the fuel economy will be better. Thats an opinion based on the practicalities of touring.
Yes, it will look better with 3" and 33's..........
Pull the oil filler cap off while its running and look for blow by - if its fumey, its worn......having said that, TB42 engines are cheap and its not hard to swap another one in.
TB42 GQ's are getting so cheap now that I dont know why you'd consider an MQ.

Yep i would agree on that one.... Am leaning every day more towards a GQ just for comfort and having a slightly new better looking vehicle...
Yeah i know i could buy it and drive it the way it is but i like the way it looks with a lift kit and 33's and im prepared for the fuel usage so that doesnt bother me too much...
So the ideas i have so far are all pretty good...
- Exhaust
- Suspension
- Electronic ignition
Anything else......

buying a GQ
Look at the rear doors, Mainly the one with the tire on it when it opens dose it drop if more than 2mm walk away also check for cracks around the rear door hinges.
If your worried about the compesion of the engine strat it up whilst the engine is running pull out the dip stick if you see large puffs of smoke or vapper then tell the guy to have a nice day and leave, the dip stick thing was showen to me by a deisel mecanic in Melb, he told me that not even car dealers know what your doing, last but not least I didn't see were you are from but in Melb theres a place called Partolapart in Lilydale get someone who knows what there looking at to look over it dont call your state road side asist (RACV) to do an inspection because they dont on cars older than 15 years

Actually on having a think im tearing myself away from the idea of 3" and 33's and gonna settle for 2" and 31's...
Gotta be sensible and the guy im travelling with will have 31's and will be smarter if he has two punctures of something and of course fuel economy...
And i can always do a 2" body lift when i get back and put on 33's...
What is teh best electronic igntion to get??

Weekdays - Prado GXL D4D with some stuff
Weekends - Mav shorty with lots of stuff

this is the 93 RX 4.2 EFI petrol/lpg i purchased late janruary.
has near new 33" muddies and what i think is a 2" suspension lift. no scrubbing issues, and also has a set of hitech extractors and 2.5" exhaust from memory.
i paid $4500 327000km and engines in top condition.
as others have said, check for blow by out of the oil filler cap while its running.
check the spot welds on the ridge next to the bonnet hindges as thats a sign of alot of offroad work.
