I have a 2003 RA rodeo 2x4 with 163000k's (work car). It's had 2 engine rebuilds and still needs 1litre of oil for every 1000k's. Cam gears whine cos they're spring loaded - the more they wear (with age) the more they whine. Piston skirts are too short and suffer from severe piston slap which contributes to excess oil consuption. My mate had a 4x4 2003 RA. If you plan on 4WDing in it - Don't! He put extended shackles on the back and wound up the torsion bars up a little on the front and put BFG 32" muddies on it. Everytime he took it out he smashed something to pieces - broke his steering rack in 5 places once! They are a 2wd that holden/isuzu converted to 4wd without beefing up any of the drivetrain. It's all skinny and weak underneath.

I am so unimpressed with them I've made it my personal mission to talk anyone out of buying one!!!!

Get a Hilux - Un-fucking-breakable!

That's just my opinion anyways........

The V6's use oil and fuel beyond belief.
If you are not EXTREMELY vigilant in checking oil levels you will destroy the engine. They only need minimal time with low oil pressure to cause crank damage.

I Guess it's horse's for course's. I have (not long owned but have known the car from new) a 2004 RA 4x4. It has 68k on the clock. I just bought it from my boss. It has been lots of places all over QLD and I have been with him while we have been doing most of them. It has traveled to the cape last year and Inaminka and the Simson and has done LCMP and Glasshouse more times than I can remember. Has done most of the harder tracks at LCMP like air locker, hilux hill, camp road etc Not once has it been stopped other than being a little low at the front. It is twin air locked and has been from new in late 04.
It also runs 32" all the time including on road.

There is not a sound under the bonnet and uses no oil at all.
I admit I have only owned it for about 6 weeks but I know the history of the car and would know of any probs it would of had b4 i owned it.

I guess I must have a lucky one then if this is the case.
In the time I have owned it I have been to The Springs and Glasshouse with out any probs at all.

I guess time will tell.

I cannot strongly enough recommend NOT to purchase a 3.5L V6 RA

Any model of vehicle has a good/bad ratio. With the V6 RA's the ratio leans towards more bad than good.
I'd rate them up there with ZD30's in GU's.
Sure some people get a good run out of them, but there's way too many horror stories to buy one.
I had a customer with a fleet of them. Two of five had New engines fitted under warranty. All five of the STILL use oil. They are now getting replaced with 3.0L TD RA's.
Two private customers had new engines under warranty and i've lost count of how many come in with low oil and bottom end noise.
You're a lucky one.
