Putting Discs on the rear of a Lux
I've searched for this, but if anyone can point me at a thread/s or give me the info I'll be grateful. I have an '84 Lux and want to put discs on the rear. I've read I could use Nissan Rotors and Suby calipers, Lux rotors and calipers and Falcon rotors but am lacking a few details.
If anyone can point me at a good (Aussie) build thread for this I'll be very grateful.

HILUX/LANDCRUISER REAR DISK SETUP - SUBARU CALIPERS & HILUX FRONT ROTORS
Bits you need:
2x Hilux solid axle vented front rotors
2x Subaru sportswagon front calipers (vented disk model with cable handbrake)
2x 10mm steel plate caliper mounts cut and drilled to suit.
2x Rear wheel bearing kit.
2x 125mm long flexible brake hose with banjo to suit subaru caliper and flange connection to suit hilux brake line. (check length to suit your application)
Process:
1. get plate laser cut to shape (or spend a lot of time with angle grinder and drill)
2. Machine out (or angle grind) centre hole of disk rotor so that it fits over centre raised section of hilux axle hub.
3. machine down (or angle grind) outer circumference of hilux axle hub so it fits within the centre of the disk rotor (make a perfect fit to retain strength)
4. Remove all drum brake bits and backing plate.
5. Fit new wheel bearings and fit new caliper mounting bracket to axle
Note: new wheel bearing kit required as backing plate removal and caliper mount install require the changing of the wheel bearings
6. refit axle assembly to axle housing
7. fit caliper to axle, rotor sits loose over end of axle (like many fwd cars) and is held to axle by wheel studs and nuts
8. bolt caliper to mount (spacing should be correct with 10mm mounting plate)
9. use subaru handbrake cables as these only require minor modification to the hilux handbrake to suit. (adjustment of cable end supprot bracket as cable length is different from hilux)
10. Fit new short flexible hose to caliper and other end to brake line. This short length allows for simple connection and means brake pad changes take 60sec as the caliper does not need to be removed to change pads.
11. Bleed brakes (dependant on mounting location ensure bleed nipple is at top of caliper to assist in bleeding)
12. check everything.
13. Drive through bog holes and you still have brakes!!!
NOTE:
Offroad use only (I have no idea if this is an engineerable solution)
Brake pads may sit slightly above the rotor so checking of pad wear requires removal of pads.
HINT:
To push piston of subaru caliper back into the caliper an angle grinder disk changing two pronged tool is the best as the piston needs to be wound back into the caliper (they cannot be pushed back in they must be wound)
I will try to find the dimensioned drawing of the caliper mount and can email it to anyone who wants it.

These are Toyota calipers. I'm not sure what rotors they are. I don't think they are Toyotas, it looks like theres to much offset.
If you want more info I will see what I can find.

I had to use longer wheel studs and with the longer studs I had to us a 3/8" wheel spacer becasue the shank was so long

The problem with using Toyota calipers is that they are designed for a full float set up. Not semi float. So you either need to run a residule valve(illegal in Aus on road and causes increased pad wear and heat on the rotor) or put up with the pad knock off that is caused by the semi float design of the axle moving in and out slightly.locktup4x4 wrote:These are Toyota calipers. My residual valve holds 2psi on the rear calipers. Its a trail rig only. I also run the FJ80 master cylinder. I think my rig will break in half before I would wear out a set of pads. Like I said the way I did it was a pain and wouldn't recommend going that route. Lots of cutting and a little machining.

I have converted my surf to a 60 series rear diff and run the same setup on the 60 series diff. The mount for the caliper is a lot easier as it can be bolted straight to the diff housing rather than having to be pressed on with bearings.
So yes, the subaru setup with hilux front disks will work on a 60 series rear diff.

I run brumby calipers.
I used the standard hilux hand break cable and modified the handbreak lever on the calipers to suit. Yes my handbreak works sweet
I have also changed to an 80 series master cylinder. One day I`ll get around to changing to an 80 series booster aswell.

and then just fab mounting brackets and fuk around with the levers?
