I am doin ga conversion at the moment.... im using a corolla 1.6l engine. mainly because im getting the donor car for $300 but if i was to do another one i would definately look for a donor gti.... rear end write off would definately be the best option. the gti motor mounts to the sierra box with relative ease. where as the corolla engine you need to get a supra gearbox and then a bell housing to match... night mares to try and find and afford!

good luck with yours anyhow.

p.s i had read somewhere that you can take your sierra block and bolt a gti head and internals to it.... might help if you were to find a gti with a rat shit bottom end!
