What conversion to do to a 75 series?

Post by KROOZA75 »

I have a 75 series tray with a 1hz, i have put 35's on it and it's slow as all fuck now, it has 400k on it. Do i turbo it and rebuild it later? Holden v8? efi or carb? chev diesel? what conversions are known to have been done? toyota supercharger big enough to make a differance? i need to be able to do the speed limit again.. help!!

if its just slow with the 35s on it just look at putting some diff ratios in it, cheap fix for now, i have the holden v8 in mine and i love the power, never go back to a diesel now :D

Don't put a turbo on it you will kill it, One of the better and easier options would be a low K's 1HDT. From there you can go with turbo upgrades and intercooling for more power.

Petrol V8's are cheap to buy but expensive to fit and are thirsty espeacilly in a heavy car. They also pose the threat of ongoing problems. They will also require an engineers certificate which will increase rego and insurance costs.

my 1hz turbo is going fine, done 550 000kms been turbo'd for allmost 300 000 of those. been given a hard time(it's my toy not a daily driver) running 16 psi under full boost and f/m cooler. i would say turbo it, whats the worst case?? i would rather re ring a 1hz than do a full engine conversion.

I'd have to take my shoes off to count the number of 1HZ's with turbo's i've seen with cracked piston heads and shattered rings. By the time you have correctly rebuilt your 1HZ (and I emphasize CORRECTLY) and fitted a turbo you will have more then covered the cost of a low K's 1HDT. There is no doubt that a 1HDT will experience less stress than a 1HZ with a turbo. Fitting a turbo to an engine that has done 400,000 K's is madness, If you can find a shop that doesn't advise against it I will be very surprised and very cautious of their advice.

while its great everyone saying ooooh why turbo a 1hz? they do this they do that bla bla bla.

care to setup the efi for free? Care to worry about non compatible looms for me?

1hz + turbo + moderate boost = perfectly safe engine.

1hzs hate inter cooling as the cool charge on the hot piston cracks it.

Though you are perfectly correct in saying turboing a 400k+ engine is a bad idea.

WTF??? Only post if you are a premanent resident of this planet please.

1hz + turbo + moderate boost = perfectly safe engine.WRONG.
1hz + turbo + moderate boost = Reduced engine life and possible early failure.CORRECT

As for intercooling cracking piston heads I don't even know where to start on this one. I have heard some crazy statements on forums but this one may have just won the gold.

People are going to be making big decisions and spending a lot of money based off the opinions given on this forum so please reframe from posting unless you have at least some knowledge of the topic at hand.

the only 1hz's i have seen with cracked pistons are very very badly treated or post 80 and 75 series ones with the newer head design and pistons.

I've seen plenty of N/A 1HZ's with cracked pistons, I've seen a 80 series owned by a 65 year old man who gets the car serviced religiously and has never towed behind it or taken it off road and it had cracked pistons at 120,000 K's.

I guess it really depends on how mant 1HZ's you've seen.

1, a hdfte from a 79 series for 7500.....that will bolt straight in on the bell and mounts...some fooling with wires and exhausts and you are making serious power with good economy.
2, A pair of 79 diffs will return the ratio back to std (4.3 and 35's)
3, Gas it up and get 2k back from medicare
4, transfer gears with lower than std high range and low range

i vote for turbo. I turboed mine at 300,000ks and it lasted the few years after that I had it without a drama. Only ran 9psi boost no intercooler and pyro running a 550deg C. And it got flogged up and down the soft sand, towed my ski boat blah blah...
The price of a V8 conversion will soon run away, I've been down that path before too
Good luck whichever way you go
