chassis cutting
Hey all, just wondering what the legalities of cutting the rear chassis on my hilux down to near the shackle mounts on the rear?
Would doing so require engineering? and would it attract unwanted attention?
Cheers
Jack

yes but consult your mod plater to find out if there is a specific way he wants it done.
I cut 210mm from the rear of my GQ ute n moved the original cross member forward n rewelded it back in. I had no problem getting mine approoved once I found what code was applicable.
There are specific codes for engine/gearbox cross members, chassis lengthening between wheels (wheel base extensions), and suspension mounts. None of those codes are related as they are not specific to cutting off overhang.
H4 is a generic, non specific, non load bearing modification.
Thats the problem I had at the time, it was not listed as a specific mod so I had to identify the code.
This only aplies if you are in Qld though, in other states refer to your engineer.

I guess this H4 mod certification is a requirement in the same context as changing a 3 seater ute with bench seat and 3 belts to a 2 seater ute with buckets and console, less one seatbelt. I say this as you have altered the load rating for the remaining 6 bolts that secure the tray as opposed to the original 8 bolts.
I'm the sharpest tool in the shed!
Then it should have a new adjusted overall load rating and minimum bolt requirements for the remaining 6 tray mounting brackets????????nastytroll wrote:The mod slip states what was done n how far the chassis was cut.
With 2 less chassis tray mounting brackets, I assume the possibility of the tray, when fully loaded per original spec, could come loose in the event of a sudden stop into a rock wall, squashing the vehicle occupants against the dash board??????
I say this in relation to a single cab Hilux.

Been through all this crap with mod platers and engineers
Any form of mods to the chassis in QLD has to be engineered =$$
(to be 100% legit)

when I spoke to an engineer regarding this nearly 2 yrs ago now I was not allowed to touch the chasis within 300mm or similar of the coil hat's, I also had to fishplate the chassis and reweld the original rear crossmember back in.
