Unhappy with sideways action

Post by plasnart »

Hi all,

A months or so ago I put a 2" lift under the GU 4.2 wagon (Extra Heavy Duty King springs) with 90-series Koni shocks.

Since then I have had the vehicle up to Wyperfield NP in the sand dunes and loved the performance of the springs/shocks, but over Easter the vehicle kicked sideways several times along a stretch of hard corrugated road.

Was not going fast (approx 40km/h) when these instances occurred but sure got the heart rate up a bit. Was in 4WD too.

Am now wondering if springs are too hard? I wanted EHD springs because when the car is loaded, it is really loaded.

Or perhaps it was because of the heavy load in the back? But this never happened when I had the softer OE suspension in.

Anybody got ideas? Thanks.

Might not be your new suspension at all.
I would be pulling out your panhard rods and having a look at the bushes condition first and get under there and do up every control arm nut as tight as you can and inspect all bushes.

You will probably find something loose under there ;)

Thanks rezpkt, I did just have a new steering damper fitted a week ago. Maybe something's not quite right after that insall? I'll check tomorrow.

so you have extra HD springs?

Was the truck loaded (you mention 'the load')at the time this occured?? or unloaded? if it was unloaded, its probably the springs too hard.

Vehicle was loaded in rear compartment.

I thought the Koni's were on the softest setting but may have to remove bottom mounts and adjust again just to make sure.

Sorry plasnart I didn't realise what shocks you where running and I would say bazzle is right.
All Koni 4Wd dampers have adjustable rebound.
This adjustment facility is primarily used for restoration of "lost" damping after many tens of thousands of kilometers. It is also an excellent tool for "tuning" the damper if heavier springs are selected or very high loads are carried.
