97 GQ RX3.0 Question

Post by snake »

Hello Peoples
There is a 97 RX3.0 for sale near me, has less than 90,000K's and six mths rego, interior is good, has a bullbar etc. Just wandering what this would be worth has $18,000 on it. Are the 3.0 litres just slower than the 4.2's? any problems to loo for?

Redbook has them listed with a LSD, and carby :? Is this right? anything anybody can tell me about them?

My old man has a 94 4.2 petrol/gas and has been a great wagon, been to the cape, simpson etc but not sure about the 3.0 litre. Has anybody modified there 3L :?: eg efi etc.

Cheers

Being the last of the GQ's in 97, it could be worth it, but 3.0 is no rocket ship... THey have car running gear (300zx)... But does sound a bit rich for a 3.0....

Modded? All the nismo Gino kit from VL commodores fits on, there was one in a mag with over 200kw, but looked never been offroad.

YMMV

 Are you saying they don't have the same diffs, suspension etc as a 4.2?? I wouldn't have thought they would be fully independant etc like a 300zx

I know the 3.0 is the same as the VL and it is a good motor. Wouldn't have thought it would be carby though :?: :?:

People don't have a lot of good to say about this version of the vehicle, which is underpowered, not nearly as strong (gearbox and engine-wise) as the 4.2-motored version.

RACQ has a review on GQs (only mildly useful but it does have this to say):

RACQ Review wrote:WHAT TO LOOK FOR
There is a range of engines to be found under the bonnets of Patrols. In the early days there were only two engines, the 4.2-litre petrol and the 4.2 diesel. Later, a carburettered version of the Skyline RB30, 3-litre engine was introduced and, later again, fuel injection was fitted to the 4.2 petrol engine. There is also a 2.8-litre turbo diesel which many have found a satisfactory compromise between a free-revving petrol engine and the more fuel-efficient diesel.

With engines, it’s horses for courses. The RB30 is more at home on the highway than is the 4.2 petrol, but off road, the better low-down torque of the bigger engine makes it a better performer. For anyone contemplating towing a caravan, the 4.2 diesel offers the necessary torque with reasonable fuel consumption, and while the 2.8 will quite happily tow, it needs more driver input to keep the engine speed in the turbo’s operating range.

The standard transmission is a five-speed manual but a four-speed automatic can also be found in some vehicles. The 3-litre engine and transmission are closely related to those found in the passenger car range and are not ruggedly constructed.
