GU genuine kits come up on ebay for $1000-1500 occasionally, dont know how much cheaper you think you'll go if you need manifold pipes etc.
I run a CT-26 from a Celica GT-4 on mine, same as what the 1HD-T's have except these ones have ceramic exhaust wheel.
Replaced ceramic wheel and shaft with a steel one after the wheel come adrift from the shaft and upgraded to Garrett T-04B compressor wheel at same time. Then went bigger compressor wheel again to a T-04E 56 trim which is slightly too big for general offroad work.

Most of the kits i've seen on eBay and the likes have had what they called a "GU" turbo, no doubt a factory unit.
I spose you could sort of pick and choose a turbo to suit your driving style and what the vehicle gets used for if you really wanted. You could use a turbo off a smaller diesel motor (2lt or 3lt) if the motor was going to be used in lower RPM situations, and maybe a bigger turbo (T3 or T04) off a petrol motor if you wanted something suited to mid to high RPM. A smaller turbo would suit me cause i'm happy to drive like grandpa. Slow and steady.....
On another note, what are people most likely to go for:
a) second hand turbo kit off eBay or similar for $1000-$1500
b) turbo kit from a workshop (drive-in drive-out) for $4500-$6000
Obviously the main difference is new parts, dyno tuning, and labour, but is it really worth the extra $4k-$5k??
I'm sure there's plenty of poeple on here that have gone either way for their own personal reasons - i'm sure they can give an opinion.

(waiting for someone to say "Is it worth the risk on a second hand kit?")
