720 and ifs why are they crap.

Post by 3000gtcapri »

I know the 720 has been labled a piece of crap. I have a 2x4 rust free 720 with a mint interior and absolutly love it and im after a 4wdso, If i can find a rust free 720 4x4 and lift it and put a high torque 2L in it why would this still not be a decent truck? I know rust is a big problem but why is ifs not good? The yanks have made some mean 720s.

cheers

well ifs is on most new 4x4 dualcabs, and new large 4x4 wagons with a couple of exceptions, its main drawback is lack of articulation and strength when compared to a live axle front, depending on what you use it for will determine wether that matters or not.
Most of the newer ifs stuff has fairly wide track which can increase articulation.
Personally i like live axles for simplicity and strength although they have more unsprung weight which forces shocks to work harder and therefore usually gives a more agricultural ride than an ifs vehicle - i'm happy with a gq so thats good for me.
If you like the 720 then go for it, rust may be a problem with some tho, but if driven well should go along most tracks that most current model 4x4s can do.
No shortage of good engine candidates either sd22 then turbo it! L20 (i had a turbo one) sr20t fj20t z18 ca18 could all fit along with probable some of the 2.4l nissan fours.
There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots

the sd22 would be cool, lift it out and drop the sd33T in its place.

It should be an all right truck. Im pretty sure the d21 d22's are just an updated 720!! like holden did it vb-vr front end is the same
My d22 has the same diffs as a 720.

At least you would have plenty of parts available for it.

If rust is a problem then why not put your body onto the 4x4 chasis

we have a datsun 720 with a commadore v6 and turbo700 box, bit of suspension lift and body lift with 31s and it goes further then my stock l28 swb MQ,

only problem we had was one blown diff from (being stupid) and snap a torsion bar coz we had it done up so tight to lift the front more (it now has big thick aftermarket ones)

Any way my opinion on them are there a great 4x4 you just cant get big motors in them coz the engine bays are 2 small
