i have a part time conversion kit i bought years ago for my fender that i never fitted is it worth fitting i don't want to fit the hubs just the coupling in the center diff will this make the lt box weaker whats the pro,s and con,s thanks

i figure with the part time if i brake a cv axle or a diff it would be easier to fix or limp home as i don't think ill ever brake the rear diff and it would take alot of backlash away aswel as better fuel economy the only downside that i can see is on road handling would go to shit

But without doing the hubs the front diff internals and front shaft will still be turning.

If you do the hubs as well, then you should get better fuel economy and then if you do break something, you just unlock the hubs, unlock the centre diff and drive home.

And Sam is right...circle work is hell fun :armsup:

With the part time conversion the rear gets all the drive. For front digs you would have to hit StrangeRover up for one of his new toys ;)

i thought front digs could be achieved by NOT locking the center diff, applying the hand break and giving some throtle.....

IMO full time four wheel drive in a daily driver/ touer/ fun rig is a good thing

i tow a big trailer for work and on muddy sites its great, not to mention low range 4 use on the tar with no effects on transmission etc, grip and braking are better as well

now i know the stuff sam does is different and thats cool (very cool) but landrover have some good points full time 4wd is one of them

I have done a conversion on a 80Ser with full time 4WD and it was the best thing I had done to it.

More power
Better fuel economy
Donuts in the mud!!!
No back lash
Lighter steering
Less wear and tear
What more do you need to know!

i had a serIII stage 1 V8 with part time, and the fuel economy was no better..................................AH THATS RIGHT, CAUSE I KEPT DOING CIRCLE WORK IN IT :twisted:

When I had FWH on the front of my IIA I found absolutely NO difference if I had the hubs locked or unlocked on the road.

I think toy drivers may notice a difference because the grease-lubed CVs produce more drag???

Sam - I hear rumours of a rear disconnect you have developed - any more info???

Yea - I posted some stuff on pirate. Sam Keck at Overkill Engineering can make them - he has made a couple for me plus some others for customers. Really cool mod though cause its really simple in the end, works really and uses LT95 parts. I had been thinking of lots of differnet ways to do a rear disconnect over the last few years and this way finally came to me...told Sam Keck about it and, and presto, had it a week later.

At this point I think is really only suits buggies cause you lose the handbrake and also the speedo drive as well. Im sure If sombody was really keen you could put these bits back in but Im not sure if this sort of thing is really worthwile in a road/trail rig.

Initially I thought about putting this into the series 1 but Im thinking that staying full time is probably more worthwhile. Being able to unlock the centre diff while crawling the front end up vertical stuff is very, very useful. And then its simply a matter of just unlocking the centre and riding the handbrake to tighten turnes if necessary. You really dont get to do full on front digs but for a trail machine you probably dont need them.

im going to fit the conversion after doing a bit of research i think its the way to go i can fit a Detroit locker as well and go hard on the weekend and if i break something in the front[high possibility] i can still get to work and fix the problem when i have time and money .i know that u can just lock the center diff and take off the drive shaft but i have had to do this before a couple of times .its easier just turning a hub and driving home ...i got quoted $420 for a set of avm free wheeling hubs a bit on the steep side has any one got a spare set lying around

Thanks Sam - great info. Just found your writeup on pirate.

Do you think the ability to do front digs is a substitute for having rear steer (in a trail rig) ?
