thanks for ya input, I'm leaning towards the vit auto, as this gives me option of 1.6 motor in the future, and would probly be more suitable for the 1.3's rev torque etc. easier fit will probly offset the extra cost of the vit trans...I not likely to go bigger than 32's, but I remember saying that about the 235's once gearing is still on my list, but in reality its not likely. christover

the gearing is the same in the vit auto to the holden auto (1st)
the output shafts are differnt in the auto's vit is shorter and gearbox must be fully dissambled to swap over

that bit may be done during a professional service/rebuild yet (a mate did it that way). will disassemble a stuffed one first, see if its within my abilities or not.
I assume you mean the vit doesnt really have a normal output, as its mated to its t-case? or is there actually a seperate output housing to be removed from the vit case, too?
so the commodore output bolts up correctly, chances are the corolla output may, too, thanks will look into that, christover

You have a LWB... just asking for dual TCase in my view.....
I'm sure you can do it, but if not there was an alternative source in this forum for the auto - you may have to search back for it.

that thought crossed my mind, already but am already over budget, and over-using mates, and haven't even started yet. still not 100% convinced an auto will be better, will make up mind as I go, christover

The other option of course is get someone to buy the frog and get an auto Vitara to start with... Getting rid of a LWB is usually pretty easy.
You can pick up a vitara with a few dents pretty cheap these days (who says chicks dig panel damage). Seen a few for the $2-3000 mark without major repair issues. Mine was only $3k odd before I did the replacement tyres and shocks that you'd have to do for offroad use anyway and overkill got his for $3k with some minor panel damage.
A few simple mods and you can be running 30"s or with a bit of butchery 31"s. Probably be cheaper and easier in the long run, although then you'll start getting ideas about putting the Sierra front in the Vitara like me
shoulders and elbows have decided that power steer or proper front locker (ie not welded) comes before the auto. so auto is postponed, but will be done laterer... the idea of swapping my lwb for a auto vit is becoming appealing tho, (if wasnt ifs would have been done some time ago) christover

It doesn't HAVE to be IFS.... at least not for very long
gearing is still on my list, but in reality its not likely. christover
but am already over budget, and over-using mates, and haven't even started yet. 
still not 100% convinced an auto will be better, will make up mind as I go, christover
