cool

a lot of the guys that cut swampers don't cut all the way to the edge on the outer lugs. it apparently greatly increases chances of chunk/ripping. i think the same could happen in this case. :?:

Does it make a big difference doing this and does it affect the tread block strength to much?

NAM,
That was one of the reasons I kept the cuts small.
I used the narrowest blade and kept it shallow (only about half the depth of the tead blocks)

That said, I have a mate in the US who just about lives out at Johnson Valley, and he cut his MTRs wider/deeper and even has the centre lugs sipped. He has not had any significant major lugs ripped off.
This is probbaly due to the way he drives the rocks -- VERY slowly

His tyres were the most chewed up things I have ever laid my eyes on, lots of cuts and little chunks out, but no major missing lugs. The thing that impressed me was the way they hooked up on the rock, bloody awesome.
That's where the inspiration to cut mine came from.

Thats preety sweet Matt, let us know how they go when your off rock crawling. I have BFG Muddies on mine and while they are really good on rocks at 5psi they could be a bit better. Slicing and cutting might help. Not having major clearance means I drive slowly on rocks, ahhh having a diesel means I drive slow full stop :)

I am gonna do it to my new BF MUDS when i finaly get em on

The first tyre I practiced on was a old unmounted BFG mud.

After cutting one section of the tyre is was very interesting to compare the flex of the tyre to the uncut section.
Standing the tyre up and pressing your hand down on the cut section made it collapse/flex very easily. The uncut section in comparison was very stiff and took much more strength to make it collapse down.

This I imagine would help it mould and thus grip to obstacles better.

how hard was it to cut them?

did it take long?

Not hard at all if you have the right tool for the job. I have a tyre goover, and that is exactly what it is designed to do. The hand-piece, shown in the pic below, has a u-shaped blade attached which heats up, enabling quick and easy cutting of rubber.

One 35" MTR took about 20min to cut.
