Front plastic work done. Got to do a bit of metal panel work (3" x 0.5" cut and fold, and flattening a seam) on the lower edge of the rear of the front wheel arch near the firewall. Mate of mine is a panel beater, he's going to have a look at it in the next couple of days, try to keep it neat....

I'm only talking about a clearance issue of about 6-10 mm on a particular point halfway through a turn when the wheel is at the "critical" angle, I am happy to get it fixed right rather than regret doing a shit job of it. I could take my angle grinder/BFH to it now, but I would prefer to leave it in the hands of someone who knows WTF they are doing.

The hubs are vacuum operated and like most that use that design they suffer from unreliable operation. In the Kias it is a well known problem. Warn make a replacement manual loking hub which is a permanant fix to the problem.

As for the diff you would be the first one that I have heard of that has had any problems with either of the diffs. One guy in the States thought he had stuffed a front one but it turned out to be the left hand wheel inner bearing (disintegrated due to water ingestion). A couple of guys have swapped in the Eaton PosiTrac into the rear (not O.E.over there), other than that, no probs.

The signature of one guy says it all:
"'95 Kia Sportage, 4" suspension, 1.5" body, 32x11.5 Mud Kings, Eaton rear posi, manual hubs, steel bumpers & rock rails, rollbar, K&N, Dynomax, Procomp, KYB, 100 watt rounds, grant steering wheel, herc'ed cargo area, CB, extra front shock, etc. "

Needless to say he doesn't mind mixing it with the big guys rockcrawling.

Photos will follow once I'm off night shi(f)t...

Yes. Have been talking to ARB, who didn't realise that the chassis/running gear was also used in the South Korean version of the Jeep. All of a sudden they are a little more interested (Military Contract???). As far as required numbers for a production I showed them a couple of Korean websites, one with a pics of about 6 x 25 or so members of a Korean Sportage group lined up in a parking lot, and with some of the mods that they have done ( wild lifts, 35" tyres, SAS, etc.)

Hi I have one of those Korean ex-military jeeps they are called a rocsta and it's the big brother to the sportege but i didn't know anything would cross over :?:
Do you know what diff ratios yours has :?: I'm running 31" centipedes and it's to tall and I can't get anything to fit the diffs or trany  Yet i'm still looking. I've heard the 2.L would bolt onto my gearbox so maybe there's hope. Maybe not mine started with 235/75/15 yours with 205's.
I'd still be interested to find out

We wait and see.

What we know:
- The Suzuki locker is .01" and 2 splines off a fit of the axles into the front diff. :x Ring gear is still a guess, see pic. A bit of adjustment on their CNC lathe may be all that is necessary.
- The demonstration diff they had at the 4WD show is the same as the rear, BUT they can't remember who made the axle and third member :x Guessing it was a Mazda of some description, and aren't sure about whether they still make a locker for it (VERY old model, may not have the CNC figures for it). The Eaton Posi that comes standard isn't too shabby though...

Another avenue may be McNamara Diffs, haven't sussed them out yet.

The Rocsta is the direct predecessor to the Sportage. Both were used by the South Korean Military at various times.

Have you found out who made your engine? I suspect it will be a Mazda unit, in which case it is very likely that the Kia 2 litre will fit, but.... I would be looking at a diesel or turbodiesel to turn those 'pedes.

Your 235/75 are a taller starting point than my 205/75's. The diff ratio in the later Sportages is 4.778:1. The rear 3rd member is a 7.5" unit (maker, Mazda light truck??), but the front is definitely out of a 94 and after Mazda MX-5 (Miata) with a Torsen diff available. Yours will be different up front due to solid axle.

From the "trip leader", John posted on Exloroz.com.au , Post ID 10286

----------

Hi All
Just a short report on the day trip to Mt Disso last Sunday 1/2/04.
I have had a few requests about how it went / what happened etc

We had a big turn out there was me and my son Andrew in the Troopy and there was Gary (aka - Garyinoz) on his lonesome in the Kia Sportage.

Diamond piked due to his poor plumbing work finally catching up with him and apparently flooding his house, Toonfish had some family commitments and I don't know what happened to Rob. maybe he heard rumours about me and bog holes and decided he did not want to be near me ????????

I had arranged to meet Gary in Broadford at about 10.30 and we proceeded to Disso via Scanlons Rd I was heading for a good track that I did with Toonie and Diamond last time called Ladder track, the only ladder I could see on the map was called "The Ladder", turned out to be a good track to start with but was not the Ladder track I was looking for.
We had no rain but the tracks were damp and slippery in areas.
Coming out of The Ladder we turned right onto Clonbinane Rd and after scanning the tracks in the area on the GPS/Laptop found the Ladder track starting at the interesection of Pipeline Trk and Clonbinane Rd.

Very steep track with a very deep water rut, Cut up the middle I went first up the widest side being the left side and had no hassles for about 1 km and then found that I had to cut across the rut to get to the right side it was here that I discovered that diff locks are a great invention.
Cutting across at an angle dropped two diagonal wheels in the rut and left the other two on the high spots very slippery area and I was sliding backwards at a diagonal I already had the rear locker on so flicked the switch for the front and immediatly felt the front wheels grab and pulled me straight out, Phew.
Gary picked a better spot to cross and had no problems.
It's certainly easier to follow and watch the front guy get in the shit first.

We drove around enjoying the scenery and picking a few nice tracks Phone Trk, Phosphate Rd nothing to difficult, stopped at Blairs Hut for lunch (No hut that I could see) after an easy lunch we did Engine Camp Rd, Upper Plantation, Morrisson and found ourselves on Cottrell Rd at about 4 pm.

We just disscussed heading out and home when I spied the unnamed extension of Cottrell Rd and decided to have one last go.
I shall call this track 4 O'clock Trk in honour of the hour that we all seem to think about going home and then decide to do one last quick 10 minute drive down the last track of the day. (You all get the idea)

This track had a mound built up in front of the driveway so to speak, it also had a track around this mound, I recconed that the Troopy would get hung up on this mound so I went around, Gary on the otherhand decided that the mighty Kia could go over and proceeded to do so until yep ! he got hung up in the middle.
To be fair he did have the two right side wheels on the ground but as you all know without lockers all the drive went to the two off the ground and they spun very niceley indeed and he was going no where.
Good visual lesson to my son about what happens in this situation and why diff locks have a distinct advantage as long as you have decent contact with at least one wheel on the ground.
Anyway I turned the Troopy around and wound out the winch and helped the man of the mound. Kind person that I am.

Good track not obviously used much alot of growth adding to the scratches on the Troopy had to get out and roll a few logs out of the way and finally made Watering Crk Rd and decided to cross this road and keep on going.
Another mound in front of this section to but this time I did try to get over myself and yep you guessed it got stuck on the top not enough contact to get drive on any wheel even with diff locks, so out went the winch cable to the nearest tree and easy as pulled myself of the mound.
This section got real steep and we found quite a number of those diaganol errosion drains cut across this track which made it quite interesting as they were also quite deep.
About 3 km down we came across a couple of trees lying down the middle of the track blocking the way and not really wanting to reverse 3 km back up we decided to winch them of to the side out of the way.

I have to say that it is the nice side effect of 4wd in the forest is the number of good trees to attach your recovery gear to (very convenient)
After clearing these trees we proceeded further and yep ! another real big tree across the track.
Gary suggested we build up a ramp either side and go over, my reply was to get the chainsaw out the back and cut it and drag it out with the drag chain.
(I knew I carried that saw for good reason) made the job real easy.

Finally after almost 2 hours we made the bottom of 4 O,clock track, and headed home.
So much for 10 minutes.

A great location, some good company, a good work out for all the gear and the rain held off so all was almost perfect.
This is a great part of the world. I have been there twice now and enjoyed it immensly both times if anyone want to go back let me know I will go with you.

Oh ! the final good point was that I did not have to get snatched out by the Kia.
That would be embarrising.

Regards
John

-------------

I got stuck a little bit, John got stuck a bit more severly. The washouts weren't as bad as I have seen and driven through, but were a concern for the top-heavy troopy when combined with the steep decline. (looked a bit "interesing" at times)

I attempted an "S" manouvre over the log/washout but the front tyre slipped over the front of the log leaving me resting on my chassis. It came down to 15 mins stacking rocks or 2 mins with a winch..... easy choice. No damage.

John approached his one a little more square on and ended up balanced on his chassis just in front of his T/case crossmember, with quite a severe drop-off on the lee side of the washout mound so any hope of any traction from the front wheels was minimal, and his balance point had completely unloaded his rear end. He did require winching and ended up bumping off the exhaust from its corrugated support under the drivers seat. No other damage.

Neither of us had a camera (mine is stil with Sony being fixed - another story, didn't work from the day I got it :x 6 weeks now!)

Panel work booked in for March 1st (delayed due to "mates rates" reality, insurance work gets done first), then the 'pedes go on permanantly.
