I bought a 2.8 with blown engine for 3k a couple of months ago, I'm in the process of building a TD42 turbo, I'm using turbo rods and pistons. The gearbox is different, the transfere is the same but a piece has to be cut off the front due to the different gearbox (a bit of casting). The ECU is redundant, I havent yet but am hoping the 2.8 glow plug wiring will suit the 4.2, wont know for another couple of weeks.

I too am fitting a TD42t to where a 2.8 was, let us know how it all works out, the glow plug system may be a headache as the 2.8 use a two stage glow system, one 11v on 6 plugs and a 6v on 3 plugs, (second stage).
I have a gear box built up .The cross member is different the engine mounts on one side are diffenernt ,
radiator , wiring , exhaust, these are all thinks i need to address yet, cheers Phill.

2.8 into 4.2.

Post by trump »

I have just fnished this convertion about 4 months ago. If you remove the glowplugs from the 2.8 donk and sick them in the 4.2 it works fine no need to change the wireing.

The gearbox cross member holes line up but you will have to change the rhs engine mount. I just fabed a plate up to line up on six holes that are cast into the block and bolted the engine mount to this which you can line up on the origanal chassis mount works fantastic looks factory.

You will have to change the clutch lines as the slave cylinders areon the other side of the truck. The power steering lines are different. Also the pinion flangers on the diffs are different.

PM if you need any more info.

I've got an entire GQ with TD42 (blown headgasket) in the for sale section which would be ideal for such a conversion.
