Post by alki »

does anyone know how much oil do diffs take on GU (3.0 lt)?
and which oil would be best for air lockers?

the volumes should be in your owners manual, they are for GQ's anyways.. look for weights and capacities at the back..
front will be 5.4 litres from memory.
unsure on the rear as you probably have the H260...

I checked my "owners manual" and it's blank space where it's suppose to show diff oil volume

Buy 20 litres of 90 EP gl5 and fill until it dribbles out the filler hole. Use the rest for your front diff.
Enough for a couple of changes

It's half way done now.
Droped rear diff oil and about 2 ltr came out,2 ltr went in and it started comming out of top plug.-done
Front diff seem to hold more as around 3 and half ltr came out.
Filled with remaining 2 ltr and it wasn't full( I bought 4 ltr only)
Have to buy some more tommorow and top up front diff.
It's kind of strange as I thought that rear diff would be bigger and hold more oil :?

In the rear, the oil is ONLY in the diff housing.
In the front axle, the oil is IN the diff housing + the entire axle, up to the knuckle hubs...

Rear: about 2 (1.8 litres)
Front: 5.5 (or about) litres

yep, the front oil level has to be higher to keep the pinion bearings lubed...

Ive got an 88 SWB GQ, I wonder if its got a rear LSD?

The reason I ask is because I replaced the oil in the rear diff last month and according to the Hanes manual its ment to take I think about 4.7litres, but the funny thing is I only got about 3.5 litres into it !?
And I read on one of the older postings that all the GQs came standard with a rear LSD.
