How reliable are disco 1s?What are the known problems and what to check for when buying one?I am looking at a 1996 tdi manual with 225000kms on the clock. Is there anything to look for? Thanks
I guess rust is not much of an issue down there unless near the coast. Check out boot floor (lift carpet), sills (behind plastic covers) and inner wings Under the wiring in the corners). Chassis will be fine. All running gear "should" be OK though the R380 gearbox does have some known issues. You will notice them on a test drive but if present most live with it.... not terminal like the old LT77 problem. Early 300 tdi motor had a problem with the drive belt pulleys. If its lasted this long it has almost certainly be retrofitted with the upgrade. Over here those engines are good for 300K kms just watch your temperature gauge and don't let it cook. The P gasket on the water pump is a common fail and you can slowly lose coolant so check for that regularly. Change oil every 8K km and it will ;las forever.
